MODULE 1 TOPIC 1: Difference between Social Science, Natural Science, and Humanities Difference between Social Science, Natural Science, and Humanities Natural Sciences NATURAL SCIENCE “Any of the sciences (such as physics, chemistry, or biology) that deal with matter, energy, and their interrelations and transformations or with objectively measurable phenomena” Merriam-Webster Dictionary Examples of Natural Sciences BIOLOGY a branch of knowledge that deals with living organisms and vital processes. CHEMISTRY a science that deals with the composition, structure, and properties of substances and with the transformations that they undergo EARTH SCIENCE any of the sciences (such as geology, meteorology, or oceanography) that deal with the earth or with one or more of its parts. PHYSICS The branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. SPACE SCIENCES involve everything from studying planets to planning space exploration. Humanities HUMANITIES are academic disciplines in which humans seek understanding of human self-understandings and self-expressions, and of the ways in which people thereby construct and experience the world they live in. Examples of Humanities HISTORY discipline that studies the chronological record of events, usually attempting, based on a critical examination of source materials, to explain events. ART a visual object or experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination. PHILOSOPHY The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline. (from Greek, by way of Latin, philosophia, “love of wisdom”) LITERATURE writings having excellence of form or expression and expressing ideas of permanent or universal interest. PHILOLOGY deals with the study of the formation and evolution of a language. PSYCHOLOGY scientific discipline that studies mental states and processes and behaviour in humans and other animals. ANTHROPOLOGY the study of human beings and their ancestors through time and space and in relation to physical character, environmental and social relations, and culture. LAW the discipline and profession concerned with the customs, practices, and rules of conduct of a community that are recognized as binding by the community. RELIGION human beings’ relation to that which they regard as holy, sacred, absolute, spiritual, divine, or worthy of especial reverence. POLITICS The activities associated with the governance of a country or other area, especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having or hoping to achieve power. Definition of Social Sciences “Social sciences as those mental or cultural sciences which deal with the activities of the individual as member of the group. The term social sciences thus embrace all those subjects which deal with the relationship of man to the society.” -R.A. Seligman SOCIAL SCIENCE any branch of academic study or science that deals with human behavior in its social and cultural aspects. SOCIAL SCIENCE It includes cultural anthropology, sociology, social psychology, political science and economics. It tells us about the world beyond our immediate experience.
