Units & Conversion Factors in Calculations The MAIN GOAL in conversion: THE CHOSEN CONVERSION FACTOR CANCELS ALL UNITS EXCEPT THOSE REQUIRED FOR THE ANSWER. ᐩ Set up the calculation so that the unit you are converting from (beginning unit) is in the opposite position in the conversion factor (numerator/denominator). ᐩ It will then cancel and leave the unit you are converting to (final unit) All measured quantities consists of a NUMBER & a UNIT. CONVERSION FACTORS Ex. Ratios used to express a measured Express the distance of 150-mile car trip quantity in different units. in feet. Desired conversion factor: 5280 ft / 1 mile ᐩ Choosing the CORRECT conversion factor is made easier if you think through the 150 mile (5280 ft / 1 mile) = 792000 ft calculation to decide whether the answer expressed in the new units should have a = 790000 ft. larger or smaller number. Unit Conversion & Dimensional Analysis ◻ Dimensional Analysis - the method of treating the units as algebraic quantities, which can be cancelled ◻ Conversion Factor - a multiplier equal to 1 1 kg = 1000 g Unit Conversion & Dimensional Analysis ◻ There 3 ways unit conversion using dimensional analysis in measurement: 1) SI to SI unit conversion 2) English to English unit conversion 3) SI to English unit conversion or vice versa Convert the following (SI to SI units): ❑ 1.34 kg of iron ore to grams ❑ 43 km/h to m/s Convert the following (SI to SI units): ❑ 1.34 kg of iron ore to grams ❑ 43 km/h to m/s Convert the following (English to English units): ❑ 5 miles/hr to ft/s 1 mile = 5280 feet and 1 hour = 3600 seconds ❑ 3.5 ft to in. 1 foot = 12 inches Convert the following (English to English units): ❑ 5.0 miles/hr to ft/s 1 mile = 5280 feet and 1 hour = 3600 seconds 5.0 mi 5280 ft 1 hour = 7.33 ft/s = 7.3 ft/s 1 mile 3600 s hr ❑ 3.5 ft to in. 1 foot = 12 inches 3.5 ft 12 in = 42 in. 1 ft Convert the following (English to SI units): ❑ 12 fluid ounces to milliliters 1 fluid ounce = 29.5735 mL Convert the following (English to SI units): ❑ 12 fluid ounces to milliliters 1 fluid ounce = 29.5735 mL 12 fl.oz. 29.5735 mL = 354.882 mL = 350 mL 1 fl.oz Convert the following (English to SI units): ❑ 12 fluid ounces to milliliters 1 fluid ounce = 29.5735 mL 12 fl.oz. 29.5735 mL = 354.882 mL = 350 mL 1 fl.oz Yo u rea are d n ex add y to ow e i d ou rcis tiona o r IP s e l C s dur Se e y essio ing ou n. !
