Windows is a Graphical User Interface (GUT) based operating system that has a graphical environment; consisting of various buttons and icons. An operating system acts as an interface between the hardware and user. It makes your PC functional and helps you run different applications. It co-ordinates and manages the activities of a computer just like the Principal of a school manages all the activities in the school. After loading of the OS, the first screen that you get after the welcome or login screen is called the desktop. When you click on the Start button, the Start menu appears, that displays a list of the installed applications. It is the primary location from where you can easily access your applications and settings of the Windows. The Search box is located next to the Start button, used for searching files or folders and applications. Quick Launch Bar This is the middle area between the Start and Notification area. Here, you can add frequently used applications, such as Edge, Word, Tux Paint, etc. that can be opened or launched with a single-click. Thus, this bar provides an easy and quick way to open the programs. Notification Area This area shows the date and time (system clock) and program icons that provide the status and notification about the programs running in the background of a computer, like the antivirus program, software updates, sound (speakers), battery status, etc. You can customise the Taskbar to best suit your needs. Follow the given steps to Taskbar customise the taskbar: = @ Right-click on the taskbar and select the Taskbar settings option. You can customise the Windows as per your requirements. Let us learn how to set date and time, and speaker volume. © Changing Date and Time To change the date and time of your computer, follow these steps: l Panel’ in the & Click on Start > Windows System > Control Panel or simply type ‘Contro Search box and press the Enter key. @ Click on the Clock or Region > Date and Time option in the Control Panel, if you are in the Category view. Otherwise, select the Date and Time option, directly. The Date and Time dialog box will appear. @ By default, the Date and Time tab is selected. To Change Date @ Click on the Change date and time button. The Date and Time Settings dialog box will appear. @ Select the current day in the displayed calendar. You can change the month by using the forward/backward arrow buttons present on the calendar. Similarly, you can change the minutes and seconds. Click on OK. The date and time settings of your system will change accordingly. Right-clicking on the different areas and objects will display the different sets of commands in the shortcut menu. Right-clicking on the Desktop When you right-click on the blank area of the desktop, you will find a menu with a list of options. The Personalize option can be seen at the bottom of this list as shown in Figure 2.6. Using the Personalize option, you can change the desktop background, Windows colours, lock screen background, settings of the desktop, screen saver, appearance of icons, menus, taskbar, etc. Right-clicking on an Icon When you right-click on any icon on the desktop, you will find an entirely different list of options as shown in Figure 2.7. The Properties option will be found at the bottom of this list. It displays the basic information about the icon.
