DENTAL MATERIALS..is the study of the physical and chemical properties of the metallic and non-metallic materials used in dentistry SCOPE: Operative Dentistry Prosthodontic Dentistry Milestone in the History of Dental Materials ج 600 BC – Etruscan gold bridge work. ج AD 148 – First authentic records of gold filling in human teeth by Johannes Arculanus, University of Bologna. ج1500s – Ivory dentures begin to be covered from wax models. ج 1729 – Fauchard proposes the used of porcelain. ج744 - Duchateau makes the first recorded porcelain denture. ج1826 – Taveau of Paris suggest the use of silver and mercury to make a paste of filling teeth. ج1839 – the first dental journal, called the American journal of dental science. ج1840s – ‘ Amalgam War’ the used of silver amalgam is forbidden. ج1850 – Charles Goodyear invents vulcanite (sulfur hardened rubber). 1879 – the first cement to set in the mouth, zinc phosphate, is introduced. ج1880’s – silicate cements are developed. ج1895 – G.V. Black publishes the first detailed study of the properties of amalgam. ج 1907 – W.H. Taggart of Chicago invent a practical method of casting gold alloys. ج 1950s – introduction of acrylic resin for fillings and dentures. ج 1955 – Buonocore discovers the acid etch technique for bonding to enamel. ج1970 – composite begin top replace silicate cements. ج1976 – Glass-Ionomer cements are invented by A. Wilson. 1978 – light activated composites appear on the market. ج1983 – Horn introduces the resin – bonded ceramic veneer. ج1985 – development of dentine bonding agents. ج1988 – introduction of resin –modified glass ionomer cements. ج1994 – first compomer appears on market.
