TYPES SPEECH CONTEXTS CORE 06 What is speech context? CONTEXT when referring to speech communication, it is the situation, surroundings, circumstance, background or setting that determine, specify or clarify the meaning of an event (Lumenlearning.com/Elements of Communication) Refers to the setting in which the communication takes place. It can help establish meaning and can influence what is said and how it is said (DeVito, 2005) What is speech context? Speech context is the way that people use to communicate and transmit messages orally or verbally. It can be interpersonal where you can talk with other people. Intrapersonal where you can talk to yourself especially when thinking and making decisions. TYPES OF SPEECH CONTEXTS Types of Speech Context ▪ Intrapersonal Communication ▪ Interpersonal Communication a. Dyad Communication b. Small Group c. Public d. Mass Communication INTRAPERSONAL Involves one person. It is often called “self- talk” Intrapersonal communication can be positive or negative, and directly influences how you perceive and react to situations and communication with others. For example, before a big presentation, you may give yourself a pep talk to calm feelings of anxiety and boost confidence. INTRAPERSONAL EXAMPLE “It’s okay, you can do it!” Planning your day. Rehearsing a speech in your head. INTERPERSONAL when two people speak with one another We use interpersonal communication constantly to help create and maintain our relationships. A conversation over coffee with a colleague about a project you’re working on would be a form of interpersonal communication. INTERPERSONAL EXAMPLE Can you remember the discussion you had with a classmate about the final exam in one of your classes? The complaints you shared with someone about your roommate? The person you smiled at in the cafeteria? You should be able to list at least 50 exchanges in the last 24 hours. TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION DYAD COMMUNICATION – Communication that happen between two people. TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION SMALL GROUP – This is communication in a team or a group, where everyone has to actively work with each other. PUBLIC COMMUNICATING WITH A LARGE AUDIENCE occurs when a communicator informs, persuades, and/or entertains a group of people speakers have an organized message and an official audience, and they prepare for the event. Typically, public communication comes in the form of: school assemblies oral presentations political speeches a keynote address at a conference high school announcements Sermons When talking to the public Come prepared Be yourself Speak in a way that you will be easily understood MASS COMMUNICATION Communication through television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, the internet, and other types of media. Types of Speech Context ✓ Intrapersonal Communication - Talking to yourself. ✓ Interpersonal Communication - Talking with two or a few people. a. Dyad Communication - A conversation between two people. b. Small Group - A discussion with a small group. c. Public - Talking to a large group of people. d.
