COMM 1100 | AU24: EXAM 1 STUDY GUIDE The exam will consist of multiple choice, true/false, matching, and short answer questions and is worth 50 pts. Anything from your book is fair game, but know that the exam will focus on the content covered during lecture. Knowing key vocabulary from your chapter is a good way to study and review material, but be sure you can apply (not just regurgitate) these concepts. The end-of-chapter discussion questions and optional reading guides are great comprehension tools for studying. Below are some more specific questions and concepts that will help you prepare for your first exam. We will have an in-class review session on Sept. 25th. The first exam will be taken during class on Sept. 27th. Bring a pen/pencil. Communication Theory and Ways of Knowing What is communication? Is this definition universally accepted? What does it mean that communication is a process? o Consider communication from beginning, middle, and end How do objective versus interpretive scholars consider “truth?” What is a theory? How do objective scientists judge theory? What about interpretivists? o Be able to compare and contrast these two approaches. Research Methodologies What is the diCerence in the unit of analysis between quantitative and qualitative research? What does taking a deductive versus inductive approach to research mean? Understand the steps for conducting quantitative research. o Be able to tell the diCerence between independent and dependent variables AND how to put them into directional versus non-directional hypotheses. What is reliability? What is validity? How do qualitative researchers interpret meaning? What strategies are quantitative versus qualitative (i.e., be able to sort between experiments, surveys, interviews, ethnography, etc.)? How do qualitative researchers achieve credibility? Interpersonal Messages: Symbolic interactionism; Family communication patterns Between the bowling, ping-pong, and charades models, which one are we focusing on this semester for understanding communication? Why? What does it mean for communication to be “eCective?” What is symbolic interaction? According to symbolic interactionism (SI), what influences the function of communication? What are default assumptions? How can these lead to ineCective communication? According to SI, how do self and society relate? What are the four types of family, according to family communication patterns theory (FCPT)? o What orientations are these four types of families derived from? o Be able to sort diCerent outcomes (e.g., privacy invasion) by family type Relationship Development: Social penetration theory; Social information processing theory How do we develop close relationships? Understand what self-disclosure and reciprocity are. What are the five stages of penetration according to social penetration theory (SPT)? What is the diCerence between breadth and depth of penetration? According to SPT, how do relational satisfaction and stability impact relationship outcomes? Understand the role of channels on relationship development, according to social information processing theory (SIP) What does it mean to have cues-filtered-out? o How does SIP predict individuals can overcome this? Know the four ways mediated relationships can lead to a more (i.e., hyper) personal relationship. What is warranting value? How can you increase it? What are the five constants in rule-making for privacy, according to communication privacy management theory (CPM)? What does it mean to “co-own” information? What is the diCerence between a deliberate and reluctant confidant? According to CPM, what can lead to boundary turbulence? Understand the diCerence between weak, strong, and bridging ties. How is media multiplexity related to modality weaving? Be able to compare and contrast takeaways from social information processing theory/Hyperpersonal model with media multiplexity theory.
