# Assessment in Learning 1 ## Classroom Assessment **What is Classroom Assessment?** Classroom assessment is the process of gathering evidence of what a learner knows, what the learner understands, and what the learner is able to do. ### Formative Assessment This is an on-going process to provide learners with immediate feedback on how well they are learning. Results of this assessment are documented but not included in computing grades. ### Summative Assessment This is used to measure whether learners have met the content and performance standards. The results of this assessment are used as bases for computing grades. ## Learning Standards Assessment in the classroom is aimed at helping students perform well in relation to the learning standards: **content standards, performance standards,** and **learning competencies**. ### Content Standards These identify and set the essential knowledge and understanding that should be learned. ### Performance Standards These describe the abilities and skills that learners are expected to demonstrate in relation to the content standards and integration of 21st-century skills. ### Learning Competencies These refer to the knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes that learners need to demonstrate in every lesson and/or learning activity. ## Classroom Assessment Formative and Summative Assessment can be done individually and collaboratively. ### Individual Assessment Individual assessment enables learners to demonstrate independently what has been learned through check-up quizzes, unit tests, written output performances, and quarterly assessment. ### Collaborative Assessment Collaborative assessment allows learners to support each other’s learning to produce evidence of their learning through discussions, games, group activities, and creation of projects. ## Formative Assessment Formative assessment may be integrated in all parts of the lesson: before the lesson, during the lesson, and after the lesson. ### Before the Lesson * **Learner:** Understands the lesson's purpose and identifies what they know about the topic. * **Teacher:** Determines what the learner knows and can do. ### During the Lesson * **Learner:** Monitors one's progress. * **Teacher:** Tracks learning progress in comparison to formative assessment results before the lesson. ### After the Lesson * **Learner:** Recognizes whether they have met the learning objectives. * **Teacher:** Assesses whether learning objectives have been met. ## Summative Assessment Summative Assessment is used to measure the different ways learners use and apply knowledge, understanding, and skills. There are three components for this kind of assessment. ### Written Work This component ensures that learners can express skills and ideas in written form through essays, written reports, and other written output. ### Performance Tasks This component allows learners to show what they know and what they can do in diverse ways through: group presentations, oral work, research projects, etc. ### Quarterly Assessment This component measures student learning at the end of the quarter through: objective tests, performance-based assessments, or both. ## Computation of Summative Assessment for Grades 1 to 12 In a grading period, there is only one Quarterly Assessment but several instances that a learner should produce Written Work and demonstrate what they've learned through various Performance Tasks. ### Step 1 Total scores for each component: * Written Work * Performance Tasks * Quarterly Assessment ### Step 2 Convert the total score into Percentage Score. **Percentage Score (PS) = (Learner's Total Score / Highest Possible Score) x 100%** * **Sample:** * Performance Tasks: 100/120 * 100% = 83.33% PS ### Step 3 (for Grades 1-10) Convert the Percentage Score (PS) to Weighted Scores (WS) by multiplying the PS with the corresponding percentage in the table below. | Components | Languages | AP | ESP | Science | Math | MAPEH | EPP/TLE | | --------------- | :-------- | :---- | :---- | :------ | :----- | :------ | :------- | | Written Work | 30% | 40% | 20% | 40% | 20% | 60% | 20% | | Performance Tasks | 50% | 40% | 60% | 40% | 20% | 60% | 20% | | Quarterly Assessment | 20% | 20% | 20% | 20% | 20% | 20% | 20% | ### Step 3 (for Grades 11-12/SHS) Convert the Percentage Score (PS) to Weighted Scores (WS) by multiplying the PS with the corresponding percentage in the table below. | Components | Core Subjects | All other subjects | Work Immersion/Research/Business Enterprise Simulation/ exhibit/Performance | TECHNICAL-VOCATIONAL and LIVELIHOOD/SPORTS/ARTS and DESIGN TRACKS | All other subjects | Work Immersion/Research/Exhibit/Performance | | --------------- | :------------- | :----------------- | :---------------------------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :----------------- | :---------------------------------------------------------- | | Written Work | 25% | 25% | 35% | 20% | 25% | 20% | | Performance Tasks | 50% | 45% | 40% | 60% | 45% | 60% | | Quarterly Assessment | 25% | 30% | 25% | 20% | 30% | 20% | ### Step 4 Add all the WS of each component to get the Initial Grade: * Written Work: 27.19 * Performance Tasks: 41.67 * Quarterly Assessment: 16.00 **Initial Grade: 84.86** ### Step 5 Transmute the Initial Grade using the Transmutation table found in DepEd Order No. 8 s. 2015 Appendix B **Initial Grade: 84.86** **Transmuted Grade: 90** *This is reflected in the learner's report card.* ## Transmutation Table | INITIAL GRADE | TRANSMUTED GRADE | INITIAL GRADE | TRANSMUTED GRADE | | :------------- | :---------------- | :------------- | :---------------- | | 100 | 100 | 66.40-67.99 | 79 | | 98.40-99.99 | 99 | 64.80-66.39 | 78 | | 96.80-98.39 | 98 | 63.20-64.79 | 77 | | 95.20-96.79 | 97 | 61.60-63.19 | 76 | | 93.60-95.19 | 96 | 60.00-61.59 | 75 | | 92.00-93.59 | 95 | 56.00-59.99 | 74 | | 90.40-91.99 | 94 | 52.00-55.99 | 73 | | 88.80-90.39 | 93 | 48.00-51.99 | 72 | | 87.20-88.79 | 92 | 44.00-47.99 | 71 | | 85.60-87.19 | 91 | 40.00-43.99 | 70 | | 84.00-85.59 | 90 | 36.00-39.99 | 69 | | 82.40-83.99 | 89 | 32.00-35.99 | 68 | | 80.80-82.39 | 88 | 28.00-31.99 | 67 | | 79.20-80.79 | 87 | 24.00-27.99 | 66 | | 77.60-79.19 | 86 | 20.00-23.99 | 65 | | 76.00-77.59 | 85 | 16.00-19.99 | 64 | | 74.40-75.99 | 84 | 12.00-15.99 | 63 | | 72.80-74.39 | 83 | 8.00-11.99 | 62 | | 71.20-72.79 | 82 | 4.00-7.99 | 61 | | 69.60-71.19 | 81 | 0-3.99 | 60 | | 68.00-69.59 | 80 | | |
