Asking Names (Refer to page 6 in your text) Llamar means to call… Remember your –AR verb endings… Yo -o Nosotros (as) -amos Tu -as Usted -a Ustedes -an El -a Ellos -an Ella -a Ellas -an To ask a person’s name: ¿Cómo te llamas? ¿Cómo se llama usted? *Both of the above questions ask “what is your name?” Notice the endings of the verb llamar…One is llamas and the other is llama. The first question is in the “tú” form and the second is in the “usted” form. To give your name: Me llamo____________ or Soy____________ *The first one means “I call myself__________.” The second is “I am________” To ask who someone else is: ¿Quién es él?...................................Who is he? ¿Quién es ella?.................................Who is she? ¿Quiénes son ellos?.............................Who are they? ¿Quienes son ellas?.............................Who are they? Estar means “to be” when dealing with temporary conditions. Él está triste……………………………………………….He is sad. To ask how someone is— How someone is feeling is a temporary condition— it can change moment to moment—so we use estar. (informal) ¿Cómo está usted?...............................................How are you? (formal) ¿Cómo están ustedes?.........................................How are you all?
