Goals Define ethical handling of data in the organization Educate employees on the organizational risks of improper data handling Instill preferred culture and behaviors on handling data Monitor regulatory environment, measure, and adjust organizational approaches for ethics.... Business Drivers Ethical data handling has been linked to better relationships between the organization and its stakeholders Customers’ data knowledge is increasing which leads to more demand on data visibility for companies Ethics means “doing it right when no one is looking. Consumers loyalty depends on customer service which depends on high quality data usage. Emerging roles of Chief Data Officer, Chief Risk Officer, Chief Privacy Officer are focused on controlling risk by establishing appropriate practices for using data Ethical data handling requires enterprise wide commitment... ”. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) Provides California residents with the right to Know what personal data is being collected about them Know whether their personal data is being sold or disclosed and to whom Say “no” to the sale of their personal data Access their personal data Request a business to delete any personal information about a consumer collected from that consumer Not be discriminated against for exercising their privacy rights : Online Data in an Ethical Context Many initiatives underway to codify a set of principles to inform ethical behaviors online such as: Ownership of data: refers to the question of who has the ethical right of the data that is created, collected, or shared online. This determines who controls and manages data. The right to be forgotten: allows individuals to request the removal of their personal data from online platforms(GDPR),(CCPA) Identity management: ensures that organizations are handling personal data responsibly by providing security(Stewardship). Freedom of speech online: the right for individuals to express their ideas and opinions through social media platforms without getting fired. Risks of Unethical Data Handling Practices A range of ways to misrepresent data to paint a certain picture: Judicious data selection: refers to the careful and thoughtful process of choosing data that is most relevant/accurate, however can be a risk if not done correctly. Manipulation of scale : Altering the was data is presented, often by changing the scale or units or graphs which leads to misleading results. Omission of data points: unintenaily excluding certain pieces of data, which leads to incomplete data. Timing of data: improper timing of data can propose risks such as outdated data or premature data Misleading visualizations: data presented in a way that misrepresents the info provided. Unclear definitions of data and invalid comparisons (“apples and oranges”) Data collection for pre-defined results: designing data so they can fit a certain narrative you want. Redaction of data: censoring or removing parts of the data for safety reasons, can be done incorrectly which leads to loss important info in the data Companies usually must manage Legal, Regulatory, Reputational, Financial, Operation risks. Establishing an Ethical Data Culture Ethical data handling must follow the law as well as positively influence how data is analyzed, interpreted and leveraged within the company and externally. 1. Adopt a socially responsible ethical risk mode l Data Ethics and Governance Oversight for the appropriate handling of data falls under data governance and legal counsel. Ensure employees are aware of their obligations. Data Governance must set the standards and policies for an appropriate use of data.
