Chapter 3: Ionic Compounds and Metals Section 2 : Ionic Bonds and Ionic Compounds Grade 10 advanced Academic year 2023-2024 Mrs. Riham Saleh Starter Cl Na 1s2 2s2 2p6 Ionic compound ‘ NaCl ‘ LESSON OBJECTIVES Explain Determine Explain formation of chemical Determine the chemical bond and ionic bond. formula for different ionic compounds. Ionic bond Metal + Non-Metal Cation (positive charge) + Anion (negative charge) Valance Electrons transfer from metal to non-metal Ionic bond: It’s a chemical bond which is formed between metal and nonmetal as a result of transferring an electron from one atom to another. Binary Ionic Compounds Binary Ionic Compounds: contain only two different elements—a metallic cation and a nonmetallic anion. - Which one of these examples is considered as binary ionic compound? NaCl Na3N MgCl2 CHECK !!! Ionic bond occurs between: Metal and nonmetal Metal and metal Nonmetal and nonmetal Metals form ……. Introduce the physical properties of ionic compound. 2. Introduce the relation between energy and ionic compound Crystal Lattice Crystal Lattice: A three-dimensional geometric arrangement of particles. Each positive ion is surrounded by negative ions, and each negative ion is surrounded by positive ions Slide 6 – Vid. 1 https://edushare.moe.gov.ae/Uploads/Resources/dd18bbf4-3930-4c0c-a6a6-00a9efefa31f/64311 Properties of Ionic Compounds Ionic bond has high melting and boiling point Properties of Ionic Compounds In a solid, ions are locked into position and electrons cannot flow freely—solid ions are poor conductors of electricity. Liquid ions or ions in aqueous solution have electrons that are free to move, so they conduct electricity easily. Slide 7 – Vid. 2 https://edushare.moe.gov.ae/Uploads/Resources/01ffa73e-6d1f-40bb-8092-df21a8d4669a/6525115/in dex.html Electrolyte: An ion in liquid solution that conducts electricity. Check Point Crystal Lattice: …………………………… In which matter the ions can conduct electricity? Solid or Liquid ? Electrolyte: ……………………………….. Energy and the Ionic Bond Lattice Energy: The energy required to separate 1 mol of ions in an ionic compound. Smaller ions form compounds with more closely spaced ionic charges and require more energy to separate. Electrostatic force of attraction is inversely related to the distance between the opposite charges. The greater the lattice energy, the stronger the force of attraction. The smaller the ion, the greater the attraction. Energy and the Ionic Bond Energy and the Ionic Bond Reactions that absorb energy are endothermic. Reactions that release energy are exothermic. Endother + + mic Exotherm + ic The formation of ionic compound is exothermic. https://javalab.org/en/ionic_bond_2_en/
