# U.S. Presidency: Rules & Requirements ## Reading Comprehension Passage Do you aspire to become the President of the United States? While the position carries immense power and responsibility, several rules and requirements must be followed to achieve this goal. The U.S. Constitution outlines three requirements an individual must meet to be considered for the prestigious role of President. ### The Requirements Are: 1. The person must be a natural-born citizen. This means that the person was born a U.S. citizen. In other words, the person was born in the United States or has a parent who is a U.S. Citizen. Some argue that only people born in the United States are natural-born citizens. However, many law professors argue that the requirement means that the person was a citizen by birth. 2. The person must be 35 years old or older. The job of the President requires that you know a lot. Usually, people older than 35 are mature and old enough to be a responsible President. 3. The person must have lived for 14 years as a resident of the United States. To become the President of the USA, you need to know the country. The best way to get to know a country is to be able to live in it—that way, you know the country, its strengths, weaknesses, and its people. Any person who meets these requirements can sign up to be a candidate with one of the political parties. Then, the candidate must begin campaigning. Through campaigning, they get to know the American people. The American people also get to know the candidates and decide if they want to vote for them. Campaigns often include meetings with people, rallies, advertisements, interviews, and more. Candidates have an entire team of people helping them. Eventually, just one candidate is chosen for each party. After that, elections take place. It's a long, hard road to become President. Many candidates get experience in politics by first being a representative, senator, or mayor. However, that's not required. Anyone who meets the three constitutional requirements can run for the presidency. Will you run for President someday?
