ELEMENTS OF THE CALIFORNIA FLAG The Grizzly Bear The most prominent feature of the California flag is the grizzly bear, named "Monarch" a er a real grizzly bear captured in 1899. The bear is a symbol of strength, courage, and resistance. It represents not only the spirit of the Californian people but also the state's abundant wildlife. Unfortunately, the grizzly bear has since become extinct in California, with the last known sighting occurring in 1924. The Lone Star The red Lone Star in the upper le corner of the flag represents California's early aspirations of becoming an independent republic, much like the Lone Star State of Texas.
