Summary

This document presents a detailed study of biomolecules, ATP functions, and the concept of basal metabolic rate (BMR). It highlights the significance of ATP in cellular processes and discusses the impact of food consumption on ATP production, along with the correlation of it to BMR and BMI and their roles in health.

UNFREEZING ACTIVITY Objectives At the end of this lesson the students will be able to: IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS OF ATP. DIFFERENTIATE BMI AND BMR COMPUTE THEIR BMI AND BMR RELATE THEIR COMPUTED BMI AND BMR WITH THE DAILY DIET. FUNCTIONS OF ATP AFTER LEARNING THE ENORMOUS ROLE OF ATP IN SUPPLYING ENERGY TO CELLULAR ACTIVITIES, THREE DISTINCT ACTIVITIES ARE RECOGNIZED. CHEMICAL WORK ATP PROVIDES THE ENERGY REQUIRED FOR PRODUCING COMPLEX SUBSTANCES, SUCH AS BIOMOLECULES. MECHANICAL WORK ATP PROVIDES THE ENERGY FOR CELLS AND TISSUES TO PERFORM THEIR FUNCTIONS, SUCH AS CIRCULATION OF BLOOD, THE CONTRACTION OF MUSCLLES, AND THE PUMPING OF THE HEART. TRANSPORT WORK ATP PROVIDES THE ENERGY FOR SUBSTANCES TO MOVE, SUCH AS THE ENTRY AND EXIT OF COMPOUNDS ACROSS CELL MEMBRANES, OR SUBSTRATES BINDING TO PROTEIN ENZYMES. BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) IN THE PREVIOUS DISCUSSION YOU HAVE LEARNED THAT THE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS NEEDED FOR ATP PRODUCTION ARE FOUND IN THE FOOD THAT YOU CONSUME. BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) MOST OF THE TIME, YOU ARE NOT AWARE OF THE AMOUNT OF ORGANIC COMPUNDS PRESENT IN THE FOOD THAT YOU EAT. YOU ARE JUST SIMPLY EATING TO SATISFY YOUR CRAVING OR HUNGER. BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) BY NOW YOU SHOULD BE MINDFUL OF THE AMOUNT AND CONTENT OF FOOD THAT YOU EAT BECAUSE, CLEARLY, YOUR FOOD CONSUMPTION IS SOLELY FOR ATP PRODUCTION. BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) BMI NEITHER MEASURES BODY FAT NOR INDICATES FATNESS. HOWEVER, MANY STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT IT CAN BE A RELIABLE INDICATOR FOR CERTAIN METABOLIC AND DISEASE OUTCOMES. BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) YOUR BMI IS A GOOD METHOD OF SCREENING FOR SEVERAL WEIGHT CATEGORIES AS SHOWN IN TABLE 9.1. PAGE 147. BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) FORMULA BODY (BASAL) METABOLIC RATE (BMR) IT IS THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF ENERGY, USUALLY IN A FORM OF CALORIES, WHICH YOUR BODY REQUIRES TO COMPLETE ITS NORMAL FUNCTIONS, SUCH AS BREATHING, DIGESTING FOOD, AND KEEPING YOUR HEART AND BRAIN WORKING. BODY (BASAL) METABOLIC RATE (BMR) AROUND 70% OF A HUMAN’S TOTAL ENERGY EXPENDITURE IS USED BY THE BASAL LIFE PROCESSES WITHIN THE TISSUES AND ORGANS. BODY (BASAL) METABOLIC RATE (BMR) AROUND 20% IS USED IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES. ANOTHER 10% IS USED TO DIGEST FOOD. THE ENERGY TO SPENT FOR THESE PROCESSES REQUIRES OXYGEN AND COENZYMES TO PRODUCE ENERGY FROM ATP. BMR FORMULA BODY (BASAL) METABOLIC RATE (BMR) THE DIFFERENCE IN THE FORMULA USED BETWEEN MALES AND FEMALES IS DUE TO THE GENERAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEIR BODY MASSES.
