 Identify the greenhouse gases  Explain the role of Carbon dioxide  Explain the role of methane Greenhouse Gases  Also known as GHGs.  They let sunlight pass through the atmosphere, but they prevent the heat that the sunlight brings from leaving the atmosphere. The greenhouse effect is a process that occurs when gases in earths atmosphere trap the sun’s heat. During the day, the sun shines through the atmosphere, warming the earth’s surface. At night the earth's surface cools, releasing heat back into the air. But some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The average surface temperature on Earth is approximately 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius) NASA.  NASA - 2023 was Earth's hottest summer on record (since at least 1880). The record-breaking temperatures are the result of human-driven climate change, spurred on by the recurring climate pattern known as El Niño. Main Greenhouse Gases  Carbon dioxide  Methane  Nitrous oxide  Ozone  Chlorofluorocarbons Carbon Dioxide a colourless gas having a faint sharp odour and a sour taste, formed in combustion of carbon- containing materials, in fermentation, and in respiration of animals and employed by plants in the photosynthesis of carbohydrates. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases act like a blanket or a cap, trapping some of the heat that Earth might have otherwise radiated out into space. Without carbon dioxide, Earth’s natural greenhouse effect would be too weak to keep the average global surface temperature above freezing.  According to observations by the NOAA Global Monitoring Lab, in 2021 carbon dioxide alone was responsible for about two-thirds of the total heating influence of all human-produced greenhouse gases.  Another reason carbon dioxide is important in the Earth system is that it dissolves into the ocean like the fizz in a can of soda. It reacts with water molecules, producing carbonic acid and lowering the ocean's pH (raising its acidity). This drop in pH is called ocean acidification. Methane  also act as a blanket insulating the Earth, absorbing energy and slowing the rate at which heat leaves the planet.  is a powerful greenhouse gas, and is the second-largest contributor to climate warming after carbon dioxide (CO2).  has a relatively short lifespan of 7 to 12 years in the atmosphere, while CO2 can persist for hundreds of years or more comes from both natural sources and human activities. An estimated 60% of today’s methane emissions are the result of human activities. The largest sources of methane are agriculture, fossil fuels, and decomposition of landfill waste.  also contributes to the forming of the ozone, decreasing air quality and leading to various health issues in animals, premature human deaths, and reduced crop yields.
