Physical ○ Your body’s overall condition & absence of disease; fitness level ○ Behaviors: exercise, healthy diet, sleep Intellectual ○ Maintaining an active mind ○ Openness to new ideas, ability to think critically, motivation to master new skills, lifelong learning, curiosity and creativity Interpersonal ○ Satisfying and supportive relationships ○ Communication skills, capacity for intimacy, ability to cultivate a support system, maining and establishing healthy relationships Cultural ○ Interacting with and accepting those who are different ○ Creating relationships with those different from you, maintaining and valuing your own cultural identity, avoiding stereotypes Spiritual ○ Nurturing a set of guiding beliefs, principles, or values ○ Capacity for love, compassion, forgiveness, joy, meaning and purpose Environmental ○ Defined by the livability of your surroundings ○ Abundant and clean resources, recycling, reducing population and waste Financial ○ Living within your means in a way that gives you peace of mind ○ Basic understanding of how money works, living within means, avoiding debt, saving for future Occupational ○ A level of happiness & fulfillment derived from work ○ Enjoying what you do, feeling valued by manager, building satisfying relationships with coworkers, taking advantage of opportunities to learn and be challenged Emotional ○ self-acceptance, self-esteem, & self- confidence ○ Optimism, trust, ability to understand and accept one's feelings, ability to share feelings with others ○ Life expectancy Definition the average period that a person may expect to live The leading causes of death in the US: overall & for the young population, and the shift in causes of death. Leading cause overall: heart disease For young population: unintentional injuries (accidents) Shift: Infectious Diseases to Chronic Conditions: In the early 20th century, infectious diseases (like tuberculosis, pneumonia, and influenza) were the leading causes of death. With advancements in medicine, vaccines, and antibiotics, these have largely been controlled ○ Health promotion in the US Healthy people initiative 2030 Eliminate: preventable disease, disability, injury, & premature death Achieve: health equity, eliminate disparities, & improve the health of all groups Create: social, economic, & physical environments that promote good health for all Promote: healthy development & behaviors Engage: leadership & the public to design effective health policies. ○ Health disparities Definition A disproportionate number of health conditions and deaths compared with the general population. Linked to social, economic, &/or environmental disadvantage health disparities by race/ethnicity Latinos are 65% more likely to be diabetic American Indian and alaska native are 15% more to have heart disease African Americans are 40 % more likely to have a stroke Asians 80% liver cancer ○ Behavior change stages of Transtheoretical Model Stage 1 precontemplation 2: contemplation 3: preparation 4: action 5: maintenance order of steps to create a personalized plan Monitor your behavior and gather data Analyze the data and identify patterns Be SMART about setting goals Devise a plan of action Make a personal contract Commit to making your plan work SMART goal Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Time frame specific
