The CAN ICPs use Controller Area Network (CAN) interfaces. They exchange digital data with aircraft systems through IMA and ADCN. Each ICP of the overhead panel uses 4 CAN channels, which are connected to IOMs 1 through 4. Each ICP of the pedestal panel uses 2 CAN channels, which are connected to IOMs 5 and 6. Discrete and analog interfaces are also used for non-digital data transfers or when safety objectives cannot be met using the digital network. The no-CAN ICPs only use discrete and analog interfaces. They are directly connected to aircraft systems that do not need digital interfaces with these panels. Control Display System - Description & Operations 2.1 Control Display System - Description 2.1.1 General Description CDS Architecture CDS Architecture - MFDs The Control and Display System (CDS) has six Multi-Function Displays (MFDs), three for each pilot (outer, inner and lower). The pilots’ MFDs are controlled by two Glareshield Control Panels (GCPs) and two Keyboard Cursor Control Units (KCCUs). If installed, the optional third crew-member workstation includes the following items: - One MFD - One Display Control Panel (DCP) - One Cursor Control Device (CCD) - One Multifunction Key Board (MKB). The MFDs are Display Units (DUs) used to show the images necessary for the control, monitoring and safe navigation of the aircraft. For these purposes, the MFDs have the following interfaces: - Through the Avionics Data Communication Network (ADCN), all MFDs receive most data from the aircraft systems - Through direct backup links, some MFDs receive critical data in case of ADCN loss - Through fiber optics, all MFDs receive digital video images from the Video Management System (ViMS). In normal configuration, the Engine Warning Display (EWD) and System Display (SD) are shown on the left and right DUs respectively. Therefore, if one DU failure occurs, the EWD or SD can be shown on inner or lower DUs. The third crewmember has also the possibility to display the SD format on his optional DU. The CDS receives functional data from A/C systems and the CDS software generates the ECAM images. The ECAM function is controlled from the ECAM Control Panel (ECP). Data acquisition is mainly performed via the ADCN. Additional backup links are provided for Flight Warning System (FWS) and ECP interfaces. There are two CAN buses: one for the left side, and one for the right side. Each CAN bus is redundant for reliability purposes. So each DU has two CAN connections, one per bus channel. Note that although CCD and MKB are in the same equipment item (KCCU), they are completely segregated; they have independent CAN bus connections. Center displays must be able to receive KCCU inputs from both side, they must be connected to both sides of the bus. Both Centers DUs are connected to CAN 1.1 & CAN 2.1 (the primary active channels). For data exchanges between DUs and DCPs, dedicated ARINC links are used. Therefore each DU is connected to its corresponding DCP through two point to point A429 unidirectional links. The optional 3rd Crewmember station is not connected to the left and right side items. It uses one independent dual CAN bus for interface between DU, CCD and MKB, as well as A429 for exchanges between DU and DCP Released in June 27, 2022 TRAINING USE ONLY Training Use Only 131 / 412 Export Controlled US-EAR 9E610 9E619 3E611. The CDS also send data like source selection or BITE to the aircraft systems. There are several CDS External Interfaces as follows: - AFDX through the ADCN, which is the main interface to acquire most of the aircraft operational data - Back-Up ARINC 429 for some critical interfaces The use of ARINC 429 input busses per DU provides a specific configuration of the displays in case of total or partial loss of the ADCN network. For High Lift System (HLS) and Cabin Pressure Control System (CPCS), the A429 switching is effective only in case of total loss of ADCN unlike FWS and Fuel Quantity Management System (FQMS), which switch to A429 back up in case of partial link loss. - Discrete links for transmission of some particular signals like:  HUD OFF from HUDS, which is used for the automatic rise of a PFD format on either Outer or Inner DU of the corresponding side  SD ALL, which is a back-up signal allowing to access any SD page even if the AFDX communication is lost. - Optic fibers are used to transmit video signals from ViMS toward DUs except CL and CR. Each interface provides 3 features: - Brightness value setting - Contrast value setting between symbology and background image - On/Off. Two discrete signals coming from the NVG MODE Switch (one for the left side, another one for the right side and third crew member) are connected to all equipment of the CDS. The selection of the NVG mode: - Dims the brightness of the DUs unless the ambient light is too high (in order to prevent the information on the DUs becoming unreadable) - Dims the lighting level of the CDS control panels. It enables to verify the correct drawing of a selected set a parameter on critical formats such as PFD and EWD. The DU displaying a critical parameter is monitored by its adjacent DU, and for segregation reasons between Left side and Right side, 2 monitoring loops are defined. CDS BITE functions can be split into: - BIT status for control panels (MKB, CCD and DCP) - DU BITE at equipment level for each DU - System BITE at CDS level, for interface toward CMS. The CDS System BITE is hosted on CL and CR DUs. Its functions are: - To collect BITE information from each DU - To analyze the fault data from DUs, CCDs, DCPs, MKBs, CAN buses - To correlate the faults with previously detected faults and with Flight Deck Effects - To identify the faulty LRU - To generate and send maintenance messages to Maintenance systems - To store fault-related data. The DU resources and Software perform: - Raw data acquisition on AFDX - Parameter processing and graphical command management - Image generation. Display functions under other systems responsibility (A661) In this case, the DU receives graphical orders from distant A/C systems through AFDX, according to A661 protocol, in order to generate the HMI. A661 is a protocol defined to enable remote systems to animate their own symbology and to receive HMI events (such as cursor moves or keyboard inputs). Display units are in such a case used as graphical servers used by remote applications. For A661 exchanges, the CDS SW provides the following data files: - An ARINC 661 object library that include all graphical elements (called widgets) that can be used by remote User Applications (UA). - Several UA Definition Files which are sets of data specifying to the CDS the widgets to be displayed on the DUs. These Definition Files are loaded in the DU but do not belong to the CDS. They can be considered as part of the remote user applications and are under the responsibility of the remote systems. A dedicated function, called the feedback monitoring function, verifies the correct drawing of every critical parameter. In case of error, the HUDS alerts the crew using feedback-monitoring messages in order to warn him from any hazardously misleading display. All these monitored data are exchanged between COM and MON channels of each HUDC using an internal A429 bus. Dialog between HUDCs is performed through AFDX. In addition, fiber optics links allow each HUDC transmit / receive a video signal to / from the offside HUDC to present on the onside HUD what the other pilot is currently seeing on its HUD. This feature is called X-check Function. The HUDC is interfaced with the HPU through: - Discrete for HPU status - One bi-directional RS422 serial link for BIT and control - One fast video link for image transmission. The HPU receives from the HCU some data related to: - The position of the HCU (three positions are possible: stowed, operational and breakaway for crash conditions or inopportune shock) through Discrete links. (They are also transmitted to the HUDC.) - The automatic brightness control function through analog link: the HCU integrates an ambient light sensor that is used to measure the external world lighting conditions. The connection between HPU and PMM is a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) bi-directional link, which is used for data loading at power on.
