Lecture 4 Emotions and emotional intelligence Aim: To study the role of emotions in human life Plan: Emotions Methods and mechanisms for regulating emotions Emotional intelligence Development of emotional intelligence Emotions Emotion is often defined as a complex state of feeling that results in physical and psychological changes which in their turn influence thoughts and behavior. The emotions are behavioral, cognitive and physiological patterns that occur in response to a given stimulus. These patterns differ in each species and allow to adjust the response depending on the stimulus, its context and the previous experience. Everyone experiences emotions. But the type and frequency that we experience them with are not the same. Emotions and feelings Psychology defines an emotional state as a type of arousal. It can manifest as physiological changes and feelings. Feelings, on the other hand, represent a long-lasting emotional state. As opposed to the physical manifestations of emotions like crying and laughing, emotional states like grief or fear might not be reflected in your actions or appearance. Emotions precede feelings and don’t last as long. That’s because feelings are enhanced by thoughts, images, and memories. While emotions are universal and instinctual, feelings are not. Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence (EI or EQ) refers to the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions. There are four different levels of emotional intelligence including emotional perception, the ability to reason using emotions, the ability to understand emotions, and the ability to manage emotions.
