GOOD AFTERNOON! CLASSICAL MUSIC FORMS SONATA Most music used in the cartoon series Tom and Jerry were Classical sonatas. The sonata is the most important Classical music form. It is a long piece written for one or two instruments. Sonatas can be played by an orchestra or by only one instruments, like piano. Ludwig van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed sonatas for the piano, and modern composers continue to write sonatas for many different instruments. Sonata-Allegro Form The Sonata- Allegro form is the most prominent development in music form during the Classical era. As a menu may have a variety of meal courses, so does this classical music form. This is why we should thank the Classical period for pioneering something that puts a variety, play of emotions, climax, and resounding finishes to our music today. Concerto A concerto is a piece of instrumental music written for one or more instruments or soloists, accompanied by an orchestra. It maintains a contrast between an orchestral ensemble and a smaller group or solo instrument to complement each other and highlight and showcase the soloist’s skills and abilities. Symphony A symphony is a large instrumental composition with three or more movements, similar to a sonata, but written for a full orchestra. If hearing a single cello already sounds amazing, then imagine listening to 50 musicians playing 20 different instruments together. Classical Composers Who is “Franz Joseph Haydn” Franz Joseph Haydn He was born on March 31, 1732 in Austria Haydn grew up poor. His mother was a cook, and his father was a wheelwright. He was a successful soprano, singing in a Vienna Cathedral. He was well-loved due to his vocal ability. At the age 29, he was employed by one of the wealthiest families in Europe. Haydn composed 106 symphonies, more than 90 string quartets, 62 piano sonatas, and 32 piano trios. Hecomposed around 340 hours of music, which is more then Handel, Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven did. He is known as the “Father of the Symphony”. Who is “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart He was born January 27, 1756 He baptized as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. Mozart is one of the most celebrated composers of all time. At a very young age, he was seen as a prodigy, a musical genius. He became a traveling musician with his sister and father, who was a violinist, composer, and music director. Mozart married Constanze, a 19-year-old soprano. According to her, Mozart believed he was being poisoned, so he was composing a requiem (a mass for a dead person) for himself. Who is “Ludwig Van Beethoven” Ludwig Van Beethoven He was born on December 17, 1770 He is one of the greatest composers in the history of music. He devoted more time for music-making than hygiene He wanted his son to be the next Mozart to gain financially for himself He grew up temperamental and would end performances if he hears anyone in the audience talking. The first musician to receive income without duties. He never married or had children. He taught for most of his life and would only teach pupils if they are skilled or pretty. His I.Q. is five points higher than Einstein’s THANKYOU & GODBLESS!
