HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES – 018 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: APPARATUS EXHAUST REGENERATION Revision: 4 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 4 PURPOSE To better understand the different modern diesel engines that the fire department utilizes and the systems used to comply with the exhaust regulations mandated by current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. DEFINITIONS Filter Regeneration - The process of removing particulate matter (PM or soot) and combusted diesel fuel byproducts from a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) within the exhaust system. There are three types of regeneration. Active Regen, Passive Regen and Forced/Parked Regen. To keep this guideline brief, it will specifically go over the process of forcing a regeneration. For detailed reading, please see reference material linked below. For earlier released models equipped with a DPF such as Engine 23: The regeneration process uses additional fuel to super heat the particulate filter and burn off the trapped soot and particles. High temperatures will be developed in and around the exhaust system. For models equipped with a DPF (after 2010), they will also have a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system whereby Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is injected to clean exhaust and to further aid the DPF in burning off pollutants. Dashboard lights pertaining to exhaust systems to note are: POLICY Apparatus equipped with regeneration exhaust systems will be cycled on an as needed basis. The apparatus DPF lamp will illuminate (either a dashboard light or 1 warning message) near the driver’s position of the apparatus. Once the warning is present (light is illuminated or other warning is displayed) the regeneration process should be initiated as soon as feasible. At or during the next morning checkout would be preferable if the event occurs after dusk. PROCEDURE To complete the regeneration process, follow these steps after the engine is up to normal operating temperature (Note: it may help to have the vehicle outside and placed in high idle to get engine coolant temperature up): 1. Place the apparatus outside of the station, parked on a concrete surface (not on asphalt due to high exhaust temperatures); 2. Place road cones around the apparatus during the regeneration process to provide a safe zone; 3. Close all apparatus doors; 4. The driver/operator must monitor the apparatus during the entire process; 5. Once the apparatus has completed the process, return all equipment  It is not necessary to record the process, the apparatus computer will time stamp automatically.  DO NOT perform regeneration while attached to the Plymovent exhaust extraction systems, the hoses are not designed for the high exhaust temperatures that will be developed.  Use caution if you approach the apparatus on the exhaust side due to the high exhaust temperatures.  You may interrupt the regeneration process at any time should the apparatus be due on an incident. Once the apparatus returns, start the system/process again until it completes a full regeneration. 6. To initiate the process on a Pierce, International or Ferrara;  Depress the regeneration button to initiate the process (the process will take approximately 15 minutes); 7. To initiate the process on a Chevy / Duramax after “Exhaust cleaning required; Must Continue Driving” message occurs; Complete steps 1-5, be sure parking brake is set; no diagnostic errors are present; and then;  Find the Exhaust Filter menu by turning the odometer reset stem counterclockwise from the speedometer readout. Once on the exhaust filter menu and after the message has been given to accept safety precautions, click and hold odometer reset stem for 3 seconds. 2  The next prompt on dash will be “Press and hold exhaust brake switch for at least 3 seconds”  When regeneration begins, the engine speed increases, the engine cooling fan sound increases and the dash will indicate that a cleaning is in progress. When complete, vehicle will go to idle and warning will be gone  Scroll odometer reset stem clockwise one turn back to speedometer 8. To abort the regeneration process o Pierce-To cancel the parked regeneration, toggle the regeneration switch to ON for five seconds. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) lamp will flash on for one second to show acceptance of the cancellation request and then return to idle. If a parked regeneration is interrupted the DPF lamp will illuminate, indicating the need for further regeneration. The DPF lamp will remain illuminated until the regeneration is completed through either automatic regeneration (by driving or pumping), or by resuming a parked regeneration. o International-To cancel a parked regeneration; press PARKD REGEN position of the ON/PARKD REGEN switch to cancel Parked Regeneration. o Ferrara – When the particulate mass is becoming excessive a yellow dash light will illuminate and on the message board a High Exhaust Temperature message will appear. There is no need to do anything. The vehicle’s computer will begin to increase the temperature of the exhaust which will burn off the particulate mass. The rig can be driven as normal, idle if needed or shut off if needed. The vehicle computer will complete the process on an as needed basis. The vehicle will continue to operate normally and there is no need for the driver to do anything. o Chevy / Duramax – Depress the brake pedal  The apparatus does not need to be taken out of service.
