According to the Torah, God commanded Abraham to move his people from Mesopotamia to Canaan Later, the Hebrews migrated to Egypt because of a drought There, they were eventually enslaved by the Egyptians According to the Torah, Moses led his people of slavery and across to the Sinai Peninsula According to the Torah, God revealed the 10 Commandments to Moses at Mount Sinai A set of principles fundamental to Judaism and Christianity Likely modeled on Hittite and Mesopotamian laws The Israelites returned to Canaan and divided into 12 Tribes There might also have been a United Kingdom of Israel, under the rule of Kings Saul, David and Solomon These later became two: the Kingdom of The Kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Neo- Assyrian Empire in 722 BCE The Assyrian King Sennacherib devastated “As for the king of Judah, Hezekiah … I besieged and captured 46 of his fortified cities. I took as plunder 200,150 people. As far as Hezekiah, I shut him up like a caged bird in his royal city of Jerusalem.” The Assyrian Empire collapsed and the Neo- Babylonian Empire rose Judah revolted several times against Babylonian rule King Nebuchadnezzar II The Persian Empire conquered Babylon in 539 BCE Cyrus the Great encouraged Jews to return to Jerusalem The Second Temple was then Judea was then a Persian province for 200 years Conquered by Alexander the Great in 332 BCE Briefly independent until it was conquered by the Roman Empire in 37 BCE
