# International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women The United Nations has made efforts to eliminate discrimination against women. An agreement was signed by the General Assembly in December 1979. This agreement entered into force in September 1981. By the end of 1994, roughly 100 states had joined the agreement. In 1999, the General Assembly declared November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
