They aim to conserve wildlife and their habitats while allowing limited human activity. * **Biosphere Reserves (18):** Designated areas that aim to conserve biodiversity while promoting sustainable development. Serve as living laboratories for scientists to study and demonstrate balanced relationships between humans and the environment. * **National Parks (106):** Protected areas that preserve natural habitats & wildlife, maintaining their ecological balance and have stricter regulations compared to wildlife sanctuaries. * **Biodiversity Hotspots (4):** These are the regions with high levels of high species richness and endemism. India is home to 4 of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots. Namely, The Himalayas, Western Ghats, Indo-Burma area and Sundaland. * **Tiger Reserves (53):** Dedicated areas primarily focused on conserving and protecting the endangered tiger species. * **Elephant Reserves (33):** Designated areas that aim to protect and conserve elephant populations and their habitats. * **Ramsar Sites (75):** Ramsar Sites are wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention.
