Environment: the geographical location that people live in can shape culture as it forms the backdrop for their different social activities. examples: countries with a port will experience exchange of cultures. The way people dress is determined by the weather. What people eat is determined by what crops can they grow. How does culture depend on time, place, and space? Factors affecting culture: 2. System of governance: this determines people’s levels of freedom and choice within a society and subsequently affects their culture. examples: people can express their opinion in democratic countries, but can’t express themselves if they were living under a dictatorship. if the system of governance change, then the culture will change for sure. How does culture depend on time, place, and space? Factors affecting culture: 3. Time period: culture changes over time, meaning that the period in which people live is an important factor. examples: our grandfather can’t accepts everything we do or wear, things have changed a lot today from his old time. People today are more exposed and think differently. Who can compare Syria today from the old times of “Bab el Hara”? How does culture depend on time, place, and space? Factors affecting culture: 4. Technological innovation: technology can profoundly affect the way people live and how they communicate and therefore affects their culture. examples: we can access all information and products found in any country around the world as a results of technology. we are no longer separated from the people we love who live in other countries as a result of video calls. Lesson 8 Multiculturalism Multiculturalism: When different cultural or ethnic groups live in the same society and there is the promotion of inclusion and shared values. example: London and UAE. Homogenous societies is where there is only one or a small number cultural, linguistic, or ethnic identities. example: Japan and Korea Multiculturalism There are two main reasons for multiculturalism: 1. Migration (which is the movement of people from one location to another). people migrate for different factors, such as: economic opportunities colonization impact of wars. 2. Geographical location of neighboring countries sharing borders like in Bulgaria. T he e nd !
