University of Birmingham Dubai Campus LC Developing Skills for Psychologists/Neuroscientists 1 Academic Integrity and Generative AI Academic integrity Academic integrity is a set of values that we as an academic community uphold to ensure that our work is honest, fair, and original Plagiarism is a form of academic misconduct It involves copying someone else’s work or ideas without acknowledging them In effect it is presenting someone else’s work as your own True or false? My academic integrity will only be challenged if I have consciously and with clear premeditated intent, copied the work of others. True or false? Cheaters are going to cheat …But you will get in (serious) trouble if you don’t follow the academic standards that are expected of you, even if you didn’t “cheat” Reality Turnitin We use Turnitin to check your work against: 1. All reports in the same assignment. 2. All past reports from all past assignments submitted to the UoB. 3. Past reports of all Universities using Turnitin. 4. All books in electronic format. 5. Most books not in electronic format (through past assignments). 6. Big part of the internet (everything you can find on Google). Turnitin Watch this short video on how Turnitin detects GenAI Poor paraphrasing (most common) What is poor paraphrasing? When you rely on the original source too much, consequently borrowing instead of paraphrasing text. Why is paraphrasing important? Shows that you understand something and can explain it using your own words. Poor paraphrasing example 1. Use of the same text. 2. No quotation. 3. Citation source is not enough. Student should have expressed this in their own words. What should you aim for? Most texts have no overlap. This is what you should aim for. See example from Turnitin. Tips on avoiding poor paraphrasing 1. Always go from sources to notes (paraphrased), and then from notes to assignment. 2. Never copy with the intent to paraphrase later. 3. Never ever write something you do not understand. 4. Always quote and cite when using the exact same words. 5. Excessive quoting can still be problematic (not an academic integrity issue but an academic style issue - there is rarely the need for quoting). 6. Trust your writing. Tips on avoiding poor paraphrasing Watch this short video on how to avoid plagiarism and paraphrasing techniques Good writing process 1. Read a source (article, chapter, etc.) 2. Write notes about it on a separate document Write the key message in your own words You don’t need to reproduce every little detail Doesn’t matter if it’s not great English – these are just notes; how would you explain it to yourself? Never, ever, copy and paste from a source into your notes 3. Create a bullet point structure of your essay 4. Complete your essay using only your notes 5. Never have an original source and your essay open at the same time Ignorance is no excuse 1.Did not know what plagiarism is. 2.Did not know about paraphrasing. 3.It was group work. 4.My lecturer told me to use this material (lecturers DO NOT have to explain the proper use of material). 5.I cannot reinvent the terminology. 6.I could not think of a better way to write it. 7.But it is my work (submitted already in a previous assignment). Self-plagiarism We always ask for NEW material, that you developed as a part of your degree. You should not re-use material. You are not allowed to use a past essay, or your blog post you wrote two years ago etc. Collaboration vs. collusion Collaboration with other students to enhance your learning is encouraged But you must understand the limits to collaboration Submit work that is your own Don’t share drafts of your writing with others in your group Commissioning (buying) essays Submitting an assessment you have not completed yourself A deliberate attempt to deceive the marker Considered to be serious plagiarism AND academic misconduct Will be referred to a College Misconduct and Fitness to Practise Committee Can lead to failure of the programme This also applies to Generative AI i.e., ChatGPT, GrammarlyGo, etc. (Read about the ethics of Generative AI and you won’t want to use them anyway).
