SLIDESMANIA Open Ended Questions: Behavioural Questions • Tell me about a time when … • Give me an example of … • Have you ever had to deal with …? SLIDESMANIA Open Ended Questions: Disappointments, Failures and Weaknesses SLIDESMANIA Example: “I pride myself on the quality of the output from my division. I delegate cautiously and check on my subordinates’ work frequently. After receiving feedback from my staff, I began working with a coach. I realized that I needed to put more trust in my staff’s competence.” Open Ended Questions: Cases or Situational Questions They are constructed using hypothetical, but very specific, job dilemmas, situations or case studies, and they are designed to assess style, values and motivation as well as specific skills. SLIDESMANIA Open Ended Questions: Conventional Questions Interviewers often use a pre-selected series of questions that solicit an overview of your style and background. SLIDESMANIA They might carefully construct the questions based on the job description or use a random sampling of triedand-true favourites. The FiveSound Bites SLIDESMANIA The five-sound-bite method produces a script that answers the questions most frequently asked of job seekers. What is it? ● Your five-sound-bite script will include your reasons for previous job changes and significant career transitions. ● It will dispel concerns about your current motives for seeking a new opportunity, and explain how your experiences, interests and values create the rationale for the next career step you are planning SLIDESMANIA Having prepared and practiced your sound bites as a cohesive script, you will be ready to handle an open-ended invitation to introduce yourself in an interview, and you will have a format for your opening dialogue in networking meetings and other informal conversations. SLIDESMANIA The Five Sound Bite Method SLIDESMANIA Sound Bite #1—Capsule Profile Sound Bite #2—Key Strengths ● the conversational version of the profile statement you wrote for your résumé. ● It includes your most recent position title and, if your title could be misleading or confusing, a very brief explanation. ● ● Name three or four of your most significant strengths in concise, bullet-point form. You might open with a phrase such as “My key strengths include …” or “I excel at …” Use single words or very short phrases to fill in the blanks (e.g., listening skills) Sound Bite #3—Career Review with Accomplishments ● Proceed chronologically, from earlier days to today, and walk briefly through the last 10 years of your career, touching on the dates, names of organizations, position titles, roles or mandates, key accomplishments and reasons for moving on. The Five Sound Bite Method (cont.) Sound Bite #4—Leaving Story Sound Bite #5—What Now? There are three important guidelines in regard to your leaving story: ● Use the final moments of your presentation to describe what you see yourself doing next. ● Depending on the circumstances, you can choose to stay general, speaking in terms of the skills, style and knowledge that you would like to contribute. ● • Prepare it with utmost care. ● • Be the one to broach it. ● • Be comfortable with it. SLIDESMANIA Example of the Five Sound Bite “I’m a process renewal specialist. I’ve spent most of my career in the retail sector, Method specifically toy stores. I’ve also worked for two business services companies: one sold SLIDESMANIA documents management systems and the other, computer skills training. I like to focus on the customer-facing staff, and in the retail environment, that includes the merchandisers—the toy store sales staff are the most fun! In each setting I check out what drives profitable sales and then I make sure that every process involved supports that objective. I reach back through the supply chain and into the inventory and accounting systems so that everything is simple and aligned with what the salespeople need. I’m a metrics and measures junkie. Once a process is in place, the monitoring has to be there or people lose track of what works.” Going for an Interview SLIDESMANIA #1) Behaviour ● ● ● ● Be confident Have energy Be positive Make good eye contact Mirror your interviewer – Body Language – Vocabulary choices – Volume and tone of voice SLIDESMANIA #2) Appearance ● ● ● ● Be professional Be comfortable Dress to avoid distraction Dress at the level / style of the job you’re applying for or one step higher SLIDESMANIA #3) Answering Questions ● ● ● ● ● ● Answering Questions Search for relevance not memories Answer questions with a set up Follow with a transition Use the Rule of Three Use a conclusion SLIDESMANIA Example “How do you deal with an upset customer?” Set up: “Oh, upset customers can be a challenge.” Transition: “I’ve found three ways to deal with this challenge and keep the customers happy and coming back.” Rule of Three: “The three things I do are: I keep a calm, positive attitude, I ask the customer a lot of questions, and I make sure the customer feels valued.” SLIDESMANIA Conclusion: “I’ve found doing these things helps resolve the problem and keep customers coming back.” Week 7: Required Readings • Textbook: It’s your move.
