Set of cultural beliefs and practices that usually include some or all basic characteristics. Religion is a social-cultural system of designated behaviors and practices, morals, worldviews, texts, sanctified places, prophecies, ethics, or organizations, that relates humanity to supernatural, transcendental, or spiritual elements. (Wikipedia) CHARACTERISTICS OF RELIGION The Big Story Origins of Religion Belief in supernatural beings (gods). A distinction between sacred and profane objects. Throughout his life, Guru Nanak was a religious leader and social reformer. He spent his entire life in what is now the country of Saudi Arabia, from his birth about 570 CE in Mecca to his death in 632 in Medina Description : It is based on the QUrán, one of the holy books considered by Muslims to be revealed by God. It is based on the unity of all religious philosophers and accepts all the Abrahamic prophets of Juadism It is the most widely practiced religion of Southeast Asia, North Africa, Western Asia, and Central Asia, while Muslim-majority countries also exist in parts of South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Europe RITUALS Performance of ceremonial acts prescribed by a tradition of sacred law. Ritual is a specific, observable mode of behaviour exhibited by all known societies The word ‘ritual’ is derived from the Latin word ‘ritualis’, associated with the word ‘rite’ which comes from ‘ritus’, typically understood to mean a type of ceremony or custom. It is also believed that the original concept of ‘ritus’ could be associated with the Sanskrit or Vedic Religion (also known as Historic Hinduism) concept of ‘ṛtá’, the principal of natural order within the universe. Symbolic in relation to its reference The self can be described as a ritual being who exhibit a striking parallel between their ritual and verbal behaviour. It may be viewed as a system of symbolic acts that is based upon arbitrary rules. Participation to rituals is expression of religious beliefs. Frankl – published a book about logotheraphy in 1959 Logotheraphy – the main belief is that “man’s primary motivational force is search for meaning”. It aids individual to find personal meaning of life, whatever life situation may be. Meaning can be discovered by creating a work or doing a deed, expecting something or encountering someone and the attitude toward an avoidable suffering Uses the philosophy of optimism in the face of tragedy, where people are capable of “turning suffering into human achievement and accomplishment, deriving from guilt the opportunity or change oneself for the better; turning and deriving from life’s transitoriness an incentive to take responsible action Life has The Franklian meaning under Psychology has the all basic concepts: circumstances Main motivation for living is our will to find meaning in life Freedom to find meaning Furthermore, it aims to: 1. Become aware of spiritual resources 2. Make conscious of spiritual resources 3. Use defiant power of the human spirit and stand up against adversity. Logotheraphy Assumptions 1. Human being is an entity consisting of body, mind and spirit. 2. Life has meaning under all circumstances, even the most miserable. 3. People have a will to meaning. 4. People have freedom under all circumstances to activate the will to find meaning 5. Life has a demand quality to which people must respond if decisions are to be meaningful 6. The individual is unique Frankl’s Sources of Meaning 1. Purposeful work 2. Courage in the face of difficulty 3. They will present as many trivia as they can about the religion assigned to them. They must assure that the audience will be impressed with how they present it. 53 Assessment ✓ Oral Recitation “ Poster Making: An Expression of My Spirituality” Create a poster that will express your belief about the existence of a Supreme Being in your life. If there is no Supreme Being in your belief, just express your spirituality.
