RESUME WRITING First Some • Limit the length of your • Putting together a good résumé to 2-3 pages. In a few résumé takes time, often GUIDELINES employment sectors such as days. Pay attention to the format and layout along with spelling and grammar. • Remember that your résumé is not your most important “ On average, employers look at resumes for six to seven seconds. However, the amount of time that an employer spends looking at a resume varies from company to company. Some employers may thoroughly scan a resume, while others may scan it for only a few seconds. STRUCTURE & STYLE ‐ Typeface (font) should NOT be fancy ‐ Use: Times New Roman, Tahoma, Arial, Berlin Sans, Century Gothic, Century ‐ 12 pt. OPTION #2: PROFILE STATEMENT As an advertising and positioning statement, your profile should immediately grab the reader’s attention by summarizing the skill sets and themes found in the body of your résumé. What did you do in this position that could benefit the school/position you’re applying for? • List any accomplishments, skills you acquired, things you learned. Concentrate on really selling yourself and proving to your future employer how valuable you are as an employee. If you have specific numbers to quantify any accomplishments, use them! Numbers are key. • Re-read the job listing that you are applying for to help you pick out key skills/duties that are relevant. • Bullet points ensure that your key achievements will be seen. You do not need to use complete sentences. Keep it short and concise. • If the job you held is unrelated to the field you are applying for, list the relevant skills or experience you gained from the position to make it apply to your future dream job. COVER LETTERS Convincing cover letters A carefully written cover letter should accompany your résumé every time you respond to an ad or job posting. If it is brief, relevant and to the point, your letter can have more influence on the reader’s decision to interview you than the enclosed résumé. STEP #1 • Every good cover letter starts with thorough research. • Try to get a copy of the full job description and the name and title of the person to whom your letter should be addressed. • Review the publicly available information and contact your network to learn about the key people and the culture of the organization. STEP #2 • Record the requirements of the position and compare them with your skills and abilities. • Consider what you could bring to the position or the organization over and above the requirements mentioned in the ad and describe your potential contribution succinctly. STEP #3 • In the body of the letter, point out the information on your résumé that substantiates your qualifications. Highlight one or two convincing accomplishments and mention quantified results, adding explanations of their relevance if needed. Second Paragraph— Skills Match • • Demonstrate that your skills match those mentioned in the ad or posting by briefly highlighting one or two accomplishments. • • Describe the added value you would bring to the position. Third Paragraph— Personal Style • • Describe your competencies and characteristics in terms that mirror the ad or job posting. • • Indicate your interest and enthusiasm for the position Closing Paragraph —Follow-up Commitment • • Indicate your desire to meet for an interview. • • Thank the reader for considering your application. • • Commit to following up on a specific date.
