A polished and professional online presence will help to position you for success in the current employment market. GUIDELINES FOR ESTABLISHING YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORKING MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS ACCURATE & APPROPRIATE Assume that everything you share online will be subject to scrutiny by potential networking contacts and your future employer. Everything is indexed and capable of being uncovered by someone with good research skills. If you post inaccurate facts, inappropriate pictures or unsuitable comments on any of your accounts, you risk sabotaging future employment opportunities. PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTS Understand the difference between networking accounts that are intended for informal, social information and those that are used for professional connections. Do not try to make either work for the alternate purpose. NETWORKING Study the culture of any social media networking site where you plan to post your information. Is it one that is used by your peers and colleagues? Is it relevant to your industry, profession or level of seniority? Will the contacts you meet on this site be able to help you advance your job search? Will the contacts you meet on this site be able to help you advance your job search? Tip: Over 80 percent of job seekers find jobs through person-to-person networking, 10 percent by responding to advertised positions on the Internet or in print, and 10 percent through search firms or placement agencies. KEEP IT SIMPLE Do not go overboard, blanketing multiple sites with your professional information. Take the time to choose one site carefully and post your information on it. Later, you may decide to add a few more accounts to expand your network but remember that you will need to keep each account up to date, which is a time-consuming task. Tip: In a networked world, people will be looking you up! Every time you use any online media to send a message or post a comment, it must be truthful in content and factually accurate. Be fastidious about correct spelling and grammar. Use a positive and confident tone.
