Art Appreciation Lecture 3 Dr. Maha Farouk Fine Arts Drawing Definition: It's a plan for what the artist thinks of. There are three kinds of drawing: Simple drawings like sketches. Preparation drawings for any work of art. A complete work of art executed by drawing. One of the most important elements of drawing is the line. Great artists had effective lines like Michael Anglo and his drawings in the Chapel of Sestina in the Vatican and also the drawings of Leonardo Davinci About the anatomy of the body and inventions like the plane and the parachute. The materials used in drawing: Pencil: It gives variety of lines. Chalk: It gives different grades of light and shadows. Ink: It combines the variety of line and strength of light and shades. Silver Pointed Rod: It was used in the past Q. Define Drawing? Q. Mention the types of drawing Q. What are the materials used in Drawing? Pencil types Pencil grades * Shading methods * Core shadows * Basic shapes * Finding shapes * Shape relationships * Positioning objects * Eye level importance Fine Arts Painting Definition: Painting is a branch of arts in which colors derived from any organic or synthetic materials is applied to different surfaces to create a picture. For creating any work of art there are important elements: The area you will work on either a square or a rectangular one. Proportion Texture Light and shadow Dimension and depth There are great examples for painting like: Michael Anglo's paintings in the ceiling of chapel sestina in Rome. (mural painting) Rembrandt's painting "The man with the golden helmet", he's an artist from the seventeenth century and he was famous for his very famous highlights. (oil painting) - Painting is applied to different kinds of surfaces; Paper, Wood, cloth etc….. - These all are small surfaces which are used in old and modern ages. - There is also Mural painting which means drawing on walls and ceilings and it was used mainly in the past. Mural painting is divided into two types : Fresco-Tempera Fresco: It consists of a layer of plaster plus sand. It's - applied to the wall when it's wet. It must be colored and finished before it dries out. Michael Anglo used to divide his work into sections so that it doesn't get dry before he finishes his work. - This was a very difficult technique which needed professional artists. Its Positivity: It suits Great Architectural sites. It doesn't have many details. It has light colors. It has light influence on the viewer. Negativity: It must be finished in a short time. When the sections of the work are gathered the gaps between them can be seen if the artist wasn't a professional. Leonardo Davinchi (1452-1519) Leonardo Da vinchi (1452-1519) Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519) was an Italian polymath, having been a scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, botanist, musician and writer. Leonardo has often been described as the archetype of the "Renaissance man", a man whose seemingly infinite curiosity was equalled only by his powers of invention. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. The Last Supper. c.1495-1498. Fresco. A number of his works in painting, sculpture, and architecture rank among the most famous in existence. Although the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (Vatican) are probably the best known of his works today, the artist thought of himself primarily as a sculptor. His practice of several arts, however, was not unusual in his time, when all of them were thought of as based on design, or drawing. Michelangelo worked in marble sculpture all his life and in the other arts only during certain periods. The high regard for the Sistine ceiling is partly a reflection of the greater attention paid to painting in the 20th century and partly, too, because many of the artist’s works in other media remain unfinished. Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel; the work took approximately four years to complete (1508–1512) The Libyan Sybil, Sistine Chapel, accomplished. The Creation of Adam The Last Judgment Michelangelo's Moses (centre) with Rachel and Leah on his sides. Michelangelo's Moses (centre) with Rachel and Leah on his sides. Michelangelo's Pietà, a depiction of the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion, was carved in 1499, when the sculptor was 24 years old. David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created in marble between 1501 and 1504 by the Italian artist Michelangelo. David is a 5.17-metre (17.0 ft)[a] marble statue of the Biblical hero David, a favoured subject in the art of Florence. Tempera: - It's the old form of painting which was used by ancient Egyptians. - It consists of a layer of gypsum + sand + organic glue or eggs. - This was the secret that kept the works of the old Egyptian alive until now. Its positivity: It had clear and bright colors. It lives for ages. It suited their religious subjects. Negativity: The sculpture oxides that's in its ingredients darkens the colors. Materials used in painting: Oil Painting: Its main medium is oil. Aquarelle (Water color): Its main medium is water. Pastel: Its main medium is chalk and glue. Gouache: Its main medium is water and colored oxides. Acrylic: They are plastic colors. It's the modern technology used instead of oil colors. It's clear and easy. Its medium is water.
