WHY? 3.Explain how electrons are distributed within an atom. ” Electrons Configuration Building Blocks of Matter Electron configuration Electrons are not evenly spread but exist in layers called shells. The arrangement of electrons in these layers is often called Electron Configuration At FET-level, this 1st shell model is slightly different. Instead of electrons being arranged in shells 2nd shell that are a different distance from the nucleus, they are 3rd shell arranged in energy levels. 6 Electron Shells Energy levels are often referred to as electron shells. Electrons in an atom tend to fill the innermost shells first before moving to higher energy levels. 7 Energy Levels (Principal Quantum Numbers): Electrons in an atom are organized into energy levels, labeled as n = 1, n = 2, n = 3, and so on. Energy levels are arranged in order of increasing energy, with n = 1 being the closest to the nucleus. 8 Sublevels (Orbitals): Each energy level contains one or more sublevels, also called orbitals. The sublevels include s, p, d, and f orbitals, each with a specific shape and orientation in space. 9 Maximum Electron Capacity: The maximum number of electrons an energy level can hold is given by the formula 2n^2, where n is the principal quantum number. For example, the first energy level (n = 1) can hold a maximum of 2 electrons, while the second energy level (n = 2) can hold up to 8 electrons. How many electrons per shell? Each shell has a maximum number of electrons that it can hold. Electrons will fill the shells nearest to the nucleus first. 1st shell holds a maximum of 2 electrons 2nd shell holds a maximum of 8 electrons 3rd shell holds a maximum of 8 electrons This electron arrangement is written as 2,8,8.
