Module L: Waves and their applications UNIT 1: Waves Day 1- Lesson 1: Introduction to waves ► Standards: ► Define wave ► Give examples of medium ► Objectives ► Categorize waves as those that need a medium and those that don’t need a medium. ► Compare and contrast mechanical and electromagnetic wave ► wave ► Medium ► VOCABULARIES ► Mechanical wave ► Electromagnetic wave Starter(Engage) (study the picture below and answer the questions that follows- and keep it for later) What is wave What are Waves? WAVE: IS A REPEATING DISTURBANCE THAT TRANSFERS ENERGY FROM PLACE TO PLACE. EXAMPLE: LIGHT WAVE, SOUND WAVE, WATER WAVE In the video, observe a wave moving the boat. Did the boat move together with the wave? If not, what can you say about wave and transfer of matters? Wave Transfer energy A wave transfer energy in the direction that the wave travels. In the picture below, the wave travels to the right, so energy is being transferred to the right Think pair share -Check your understanding ► What is wave? ► List some examples of wave ► Does the wave move the insect (picture to the right) with it?. Medium: ► Is a matter through which a wave travels ► Examples: Air, liquid, solid Based on whether a wave requires a medium or not, waves are classified in to two 1.Mechanical waves: travel through a medium (matter). Ex. sound 2. Electromagnetic waves: do not need a medium to travel through. Ex. light Check your understanding Categorize the following as mechanical or electromagnetic waves and explain why Water wave light wave Sound wave wave on spring/ slinky Mechanical Electromagnetic Water wave light wave Sound wave Wave on spring/ slinky Explain Explain Extension- check your understanding ► https://wordwall.net/resource/35563615 Day 2- Lesson 1(continued): Types of waves ► Standards: ► List the two types of waves ► Identify the meaning of Longitudinal wave ► Objectives ► Identify the meaning of transvers wave ► Label parts of longitudinal and transverse waves ► Explain how a mechanical wave is formed ► Model and Compare longitudinal wave and transvers wave ► Longitudinal wave ► Transvers wave ► Compression ► VOCABULARIES ► Rarefaction ► Crest ► Trough Starter Draw any type of wave that you know Types of mechanical waves ( Mechanical waves are produced when a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate. Checking understanding Label the following waves as transverse and longitudinal. Longitudinal Transverse 2 types of Mechanical waves 1. Transverse 2. longitudinal ► Similarities: Both types of waves transfer energy in the direction they travel, both need medium, and both move (vibrate). ► Differences: They differ in the way the disturbance (vibration) move in relation to the direction of the wave. 1. Transverse: means across, the particles of the medium move up & down or perpendicular to the direction of the wave. (Ex. Water wave) 2. Longitudinal: move the medium parallel to the direction of the wave (back & forth) or the coils move parallel to the direction the wave travels. (Ex. sound) Parts of Transverse waves the top of the the highest amount of vibration from wave the rest position Rest Position No vibration/ motion the bottom of the length of the wave the wave Parts of longitudinal wave Coils are close Coils are spread Coils are close to each other out to each other Think pair share - Check your understanding ► Draw parts of the two types of waves you learned in your copybook. ► Practice waves in rope https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/wave-on-a-string/latest/wav e-on-a-string_all.html Independent activity- Practice labeling Label the diagram below using the words in the box Compression Crest Trough Rarefaction Longitudinal Transvers Group work (explore)-Modeling two types of waves use a slinky given by the teacher to make different waves and compare the waves that you made. Focus on the following points - what makes the slinky moves, - which direction is it moving, - is the slinks moving forward or something else is moving? -Record your result on the separate sheet of paper ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxtiKodKq_E Check your understanding- do this after the activity 1. Compare and contrast longitudinal and transvers waves. 2. Give one example for longitudinal and transvers wave 3. Which part of the longitudinal wave correspond to crest and trough of transvers waves. 4. Draw a longitudinal and transvers waves
