SPORT & ENVIRONMENT CHAPTER 15 “ONE” WITH NATURE Environmental inequities Impact of environment on sport AGENDA Impact of sport on environment Sustainability vs. ecological modernization New practices Outcomes of the unsustainable use of environment (‘business as usual’) Intergenerational inequity ENVIRONMENTAL INEQUITIES Transfrontier inequity Intragenerational inequity Interspecies inequity ARE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IMPACTING SPORT?  Competing in polluted environments (air, water) ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IMPACTING SPORT  Global warming  Less precipitation (snow, rain)  Artificial snow  Forest fires ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IMPACTING SPORT  Erosion of shorelines / rising coasts  Beaches  Golf courses ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IMPACTING SPORT  Major weather incidents (e.g., flooding, extreme temperatures)  Damaging infrastructure  Impacting events, athletes, spectators IMPACT OF SPORT ON THE ENVIRONMENT: SPORT MEGAEVENTS  Range of sports in many environments (water, trails, ski hills, urban environments)  Impact of construction  Spectator consumption IMPACT OF OTHER SPORTS AND RECREATION ON THE ENVIRONMENT  Outdoor recreation  Large participant activities (e.g., triathlons, marathons)  Golf courses  Production of sporting goods and clothing OUTDOOR RECREATION  Footprint  “Leave no trace” (garbage)  Interaction with natural environment GOLF COURSES  Diversion of water  Use of pesticides and herbicides  Constructed in or near protected areas (e.g., wetlands; unique habitats) APPROACHES TO BEING MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY  Sustainability  Ecological modernization SUSTAINABILITY  Sustainability = Strategy for dealing with the ‘triple bottom line’ ASSUMPTIONS OF SUSTAINABILITY  Economic growth & addressing environmental issues are compatible  Being sustainable is “good for business”  We can hold SME, produce, consume sport commodities & be sustainable ECOLOGICAL MODERNIZATION (EM)  Societal progression with environmentalism  Willing development and innovation of ‘green’ products and processes  Not forced to consider environmentalism STRONG VS. WEAK ECOLOGICAL MODERNIZATION Strong EM is characterized by willingness to:  Consult with public  Reflect on consequences of new technologies  Involve monitoring by governments or non-profit regulators STRONG VS. WEAK ECOLOGICAL MODERNIZATION  Weak EM is characterized by:  Market demand for pro-environment products and services  Not interested in being regulated EM AND SPORT MANAGEMENT  How?  Acknowledge that sport activities impact the natural environment  Work with environmentally-focused stakeholders  Promote innovation as a solution  Advocate for voluntary and gradual forms of regulation PROBLEMS WITH EM  Power imbalances  Can environmental impacts be reversed? PROBLEMS WITH EM  Are economic and environmental interests compatible?  Greenwashing  Sport washing  Carbon offsetting WHAT CAN BE DONE DIFFERENTLY?  Instead of handing out programs at sport events?  Instead of producing sport equipment from plastics?  Instead of golf courses using fresh water?  Instead of teams regularly travelling to compete?
