So, in simple words you can say that computer is an electronic device which is used for fast calculation. **Components of a Computer** - A computer contains many electric, electronic, and mechanical components known as **hardware.** ![](media/image4.png) The inside of the **system unit** on a desktop personal computer includes: ![](media/image6.png) The **motherboard** is the main circuit board of the system unit - A computer **chip** contains integrated circuits. **Hard Disks** - A hard disk contains one or more inflexible, circular platters that use magnetic particles to store data, instructions, and information **WHY COMPUTERS ARE POWERFUL** **Advantages of using Computer** 1. **Speed --** When data, instruction, and information flow along electronic circuits in a computer, they travel at incredibly fast speed. 2. **Reliability --** The electronic components in modern computers are dependable and reliable because they rarely break or fail. 3. **Communications --** Most computer today can communicate with other computers, often wirelessly. 4. **Storage --** A computer can transfer data quickly from storage to memory, process it, and store it again for future use. 1. **Health Risks --** Prolonged or improper use of computer can lead to injuries or disorders of the hands, wrists, elbows, eyes, neck, and back. 2. **Violation of Privacy --** In many instances, where personal and confidential records were not protected properly, individuals have found their privacy violated and identities stolen. 3. **Computer Crimes --** People use the computer for negative activities. 4. **Unemployment --** Different tasks are performed automatically by using computers. It reduces the need of people and increase unemployment in society. **Networks and the Internet**![](media/image10.png) A **network** is a collection of computers and devices connected together, often wirelessly, via communications devices and transmission media. The **Internet** is a worldwide collection of networks that connects millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and individuals. - People use the Internet for a variety of reasons: **Computer Software** - **Software,** also called a **program**, tells the computer what tasks to perform and how to perform them. - **System Software** -- is a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer's hardware and application programs. Example is the operating system (OS) and basic input/output system (BIOS). - **Application Software** -- Unlike system software, an application program or app performs a particular function for the user. Examples include browsers, word processors and spreadsheets. - **Installing** is the process of setting up software to work with the computer, printer, and other hardware. - A **programmer** develops software or writes the instructions that direct the computer to process data into information. ![](media/image24.png) **Categories of Computers** **Personal Computers** - A **personal computer** can perform all of its input, processing, output, and storage activities by itself - Two popular architectures are the PC and the Apple - **Desktop computer**![](media/image26.png) **Mobile Computers and Mobile Devices** **Game Consoles** - A **game console** is a mobile computing device designed for single-player or multiplayer video games. **Minicomputer**![](media/image46.jpg) - Computer that is smaller, less expensive, and less powerful than a [mainframe](https://www.britannica.com/technology/mainframe) or [supercomputer](https://www.britannica.com/technology/supercomputer), but more expensive and more powerful than a [personal computer](https://www.britannica.com/technology/personal-computer). **Mainframes** - **Mainframes** are a type of powerful computer that can handle hundreds or thousands of connected users simultaneously and generally known for their large size, amount of storage, processing power and high level of reliability. They are primarily used by large organizations for mission critical applications requiring high volumes of data processing. **Supercomputer**![](media/image48.png) - A supercomputer is the fastest, most powerful computer. Traditionally, supercomputers have been used for scientific and engineering applications that must handle very large databases or do a great amount of computation (or both). - Fastest supercomputers are capable of processing more than one quadrillion instructions in a single second. **Embedded Computer** - An embedded computer is a microprocessor-based system, specially designed to perform a specific function and belong to a larger system. It comes with a combination of hardware and software to achieve a unique task and withstand different conditions. **Elements of an Information System** ![](media/image50.png) **Example of Computer Usage:** **Computer Application in Society** Explain the following question based on your research. 1.
