DENTAL WAXES DR. ADLA AHMED Waxes are : thermoplastic materials which are normally solid at room temperature, but when exposed to moderate temperatures, melt without decomposition to form mobile liquids. Classification based on : I. Origin 1- Natural : Mineral Plant Insect Animal 2- Synthetic : Petroleum products II. Chemical composition 1- Hydrocarbons 2- Esters III. Dental uses 1- clinical use : Bite registration wax Disclosing wax Utility wax 2- lab. use : 1*Pattern wax Inlay wax Casting wax Baseplate wax 2*Processing wax Utility wax beading Boxing wax Sticky wax Block out wax 3*Impression wax Corrective wax Bite registration Bite registration dental wax: Disclosing dental wax: Composition : Bees wax, paraffin wax, ceresin, aluminium or copper particles ( give stability ). Uses : record occlusal surface of teeth and the relation between upper and lower teeth. Inlay pattern dental wax : Type 1 : softened and used directly in the mouth. Type 2 : more frequently used, the wax is melted onto a die outside the mouth in the indirect technique. Casting pattern dental wax : Used to: construct the metal framework of partial dentures Available in different colors and shapes { clasps ,mesh ,bars } Baseplate pattern dental wax : Used in : Occlusal rims in complete denture to establish : vertical dimension occlusal plane initial arch form denture contour Utility processing wax (beading) Used to Customize borders of the tray. Beading : Preserve the border of final impression ( Should be kept below the border by 2mm so the vestibule will be clear after pouring. Boxing processing wax It will form the base portion of the poured cast. ( It will cover the area all around the utility wax ) make the cast smooth & Increases the thickness of the cast Sticky processing wax Composition: resin and wax Yellow in color Used for temporary fixation during fabrication & repair. Block out processing wax This wax was developed for blocking out undercuts, creating clasp steps and relieving critical areas of the model. Corrective impression wax Used : with other impression materials in process of taking edentulous impression record posterior palatal seal Bite registration impression wax
