# Children's Rights Children are usually more vulnerable and need special care. More than 50% of the population in many countries are children. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted by the United Nations in 1989, aims to ensure safe lives, housing, food, health, and protection from religious discrimination. It's been in effect since 2 September 1990. Children's upbringing and experiences during childhood impact society. Children of different ages have varying abilities to protect themselves from rights violations and take advantage of available protections. # FYI Violations against children vary by location. In countries with armed conflicts, both male and female children may be used as combatants. In other countries, children may be denied education and forced into labor. In some countries, girls face disadvantages.
