Vocabulary Compromise (n): an agreement between two sides who have different opinions, in which each side gives up something it had wanted. Conservation (n): the protection of plants, animals, and natural areas from the damaging effects of human activity. Durable (adj): able to last a long time without being damaged. Efficiency (n): the condition or fact of producing the results you want without waste. Relevant (adj): related to a subject or to something happening or being discussed. Second-hand (adj): not new; having been used in the past by someone else. Sector (n): a part of society which can be separated from other parts because of its own special character. Function (n): a purpose, or the way something works. Depressing (adj): making you feel unhappy and without hope. Inspiring (adj): giving you new ideas and making you feel you want to do something. Civilized (adj): having a well-developed way of life and social systems. Reflects on (vph): causes people to think of someone or something in a specified way. Reputation (n): the general opinion that people have about someone. Demonstrated (v): showed how to do something; explained. Amenities (n): features or facilities provided to make a place more comfortable or convenient, such as parks and shops. Green belt (n): an area of open land, often surrounding a city, where development is restricted to preserve nature and prevent Urban sprawl. Outskirts (n): the outer edges or fringes of a town or city, often less densely populated or developed than central areas. Skyscrapers (n): very tall, multi-story buildings commonly found in urban areas. Structural engineer (n): a professional who designs, analyzes, and ensures the safety and stability of buildings, bridges, and other structures. Expressive (adj): showing what somebody thinks or feels. Figurative (adj): showing people or things in a similar way to real life. Lifelike (adj): looks very real. Monumental (adj): very big. Moving (adj): causing strong of sadness or sympathy. Demographic (adj): relating to human populations and the information collected about them such as their size, growth, ages, and education. Adapt (v): to adjust to different condition or uses. Undertake (v): to take responsibility for and begin doing something. Capacity (n): a particular position or job; a role. Voluntary (adj): done without being forced or paid to do it. Leisure (n): the time when you are not working or doing other duties. Documented (adj): recorded or written down. Median (n): the middle number or amount in a series. Allocate (v): give something as a share of a total amount, to be used in a particular way. Proportion (n): a part or share of the whole. Range (n): the amount or number between a lower and upper limit. Cope (v): deal with problems or difficulties successfully. Pension (n): a sum of money paid regularly to a person who has retired.
