**[Patella tendonitis]** ------------------------------------ ### **[Anatomy]** - A tear of the **patella tendon** - located just outside the **knee joint** which connects the **patella** to the **shinbone** - Causes inflammation at the front of the knee (**apex**) and pain during certain activities as well as **microtears of tendon fibres**. ### **[Mechanisms]** - Most oftently caused by **overuse** and **repeated stress** on **patellar tendon** during certain activities with **running and jumping e.g. basketball, football** etc. - Caused by **fatigue** or **high intensity exercise** as it will increase chance of **irregular movement** ### **[Predisposing factors]** - **Sport** - **Tight muscles / poor warm-up** - **Fitness level** - **Sudden increase in exercise intensity** - **Prior knee injuries** - **Poor footwear** ### **[Rehab / treatment ]** - **Ice pack** (immediate) - **Injection** (reduces swelling) - **Limit aggravation** / **exercise** - Stretching (**passive stretches of quadriceps group 3x10 every 24hrs, restores flexibility)** - Quad strengthening exercises (**leg press**) - **Limit overstress of tendon**
