Midterm Notes 6th Grade U.1 M.1 L.1 Earth Moves in 2 Ways ○ Rotates(Rotation)- Spins on its axis(24 hours-Makes day/night) Rotation Axis-line which an object rotates/spins ○ Revolves(Revolution)- Moves around the Sun in Earth’s orbit(356 Days or 1 year- Makes Season) Orbit- moving around another object On January 3rd the Earth is closest to the sun, but the northern hemisphere is pointed away from the sun, this is why we are experiencing Winter. July 4th Earth is farthest from the sun, but the northern hemisphere is appointed towards the sun, this is why we are experiencing Summer. Earth’s spherical shape causes the Sun to hit the Equator more direct, causing it to be hotter at the equator and colder at the poles. Since the earth’s axis is tilted when one hemisphere is experiencing Winter the other is experiencing Summer U.1 M.1 L.2 The moon does not emit light- it reflects the sun's light. The moon revolves around Earth because of Earth’s Gravitational pull. The Moon's rotation and revolution take about the same amount of time. 27.3 days. ○ Because of this we always see the same side of the moon- The near side There are 8 Moon Phases ○ New Moon ○ Waxing Crescent ○ First Quarter ○ Waxing Gibbous ○ Full Moon ○ Waning Gibbous ○ Third Quarter ○ Waning Crescent U.1 M.1 L.3 2 Differents parts of a shadow ○ Umbra- canter darkest part ○ Penumbra- lighter outer parts 2 different eclipses ○ Solar- Moon’s shadow is on earth, moon is in between earth and the sun ○ Lunar Earth’s shadow is on the moon, earth is in between the moon and sun- Moon’s Orbit is slightly tilted so we do not have an eclipse every month U.1 M.2 L.1 Gravity- Invisible non contact force Galaxies- huge collections of stars Earth is in the Milky Way Galaxy Classification of galaxies- ○ Spiral- Arms that spiral out from the center ○ Elliptical- ball like shaped ○ Irregular- no defined shape U. 1 M.2 L.2 Astronomers use telescopes to collect data from space Astronomical Unit (AU)- unit created to measure distances in space Solar System consist of: ○ Planets ○ Moons ○ Dwarf Planets ○ Asteroids ○ Comets ○ Meteoroids, Meteors, Meteorites U.2 M.1 L.1 & L.2 Evaporation is when liquid turns into gas. Transpiration is when plants release water vapor into the atmosphere. Condensation is when a gas turns into a liquid. Precipitation is moisture that falls from clouds to Earth’s surface ○ Rain ○ Sleet ○ Snow ○ Hail Water moves from Earth’s surface to the atmosphere and back again in the Water Cycle. The Sun and Gravity are the two main factors that drive the Water cycle. Water on Earth can be found as a solid, liquid, or gas
