# Elute 103 Literary Terms ## Alliteration - Repetition of identical or similar Sounds at the beginning of words in stressed syllables - Eg: on Scrolls of Silver snowy sentence - Close repetition of Consonant Sounds beginning of words - The effect may be strengthened by the use of alliterative Letter in the middle of words as well. - She Sell sea shells by the seashore. - Alliteration may be used to enforce the meaning as well as for its pure melodic beauty. - Eg: Alliteration upon -w- is believed that it gives a sense of vastness and desolation: way, Wave, wide world. - Upon-s- and-1- Convey a sense of peace and serenity. ## Allegory - Term derives from Greek "allegorig". - Used to denote a technique of literature rather than a type of extended metaphor - The calm lake was a mirror. - Allegory is a story in a verse or prose with a double meaning, a surface meaning, and a primary meaning or a secondary and under the surface meaning. - It is a story that can be read, understood & interpreted at two levels. - In some cases at 3/4 Levels. ## Piers Plowman. P.P - A long religious allegory in alliterative verse. - Rhythmical pattern is based on alliteration. - A Christian moral allegory, written in W. Midland dialect. - Author William Langland's name written at the end. - No rough information. - Poem in the form of dream vision. ## The Story - P.P introduced a series of visions about the way in which man can attain salvation. - Conveys the poet's personal reaction against the beliefs & values of Medieval english Society. - Poet reveals the true nature of the vices of his time. - Piers is a 14th c. Ideal farmer concerned with the evils of contemporary Society. - He can judge the world around him and indicate the way leading to a spiritual well being as he lived according to the true Christian values. ### The Opening Vision - Dreamer sees far away in the distant east a tower standing on a high hill. - It is the tower of troth, the house of God. - Symbol of one can find hypocrisy & corruption not vitality good & lat/vestve. - Dressed like a hermits falls asleep. - Dreams of a fair field of folk symbolizing the world as it is. - A huge crowd starts on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Holy Truth. The plowman knows where truth resides. (Like Canterbury tales). - Dreamer Sees countless figures, no one knows where Truth resides. - He finishes blowing Truth others two lines to him. - Those who do good will go to heaven & those who do evil will go to eternal fire. - The dreamer is convinced that to do well is key to salvation. ### Dream Vision - A mode of narrative widely employed (used) by medieval poets.
