ANAPHY 1. Digestive System A. HORMONES and ENZYMES 1. Secretin - regulates gastric acid secretion 2. Gastric Juice - it's role is to digests protein and fats 3. Amylase and Lipase - secreted by pancreas 4. Duodenum - enzymes from pancreas are released here B. Anatomy 5. Duodenum - part of the small intestine that absorbs most nutrients 6. Small intestine - part of GI tract that absorbs most water and nutrients 7. Pyloric Sphincter - a valve that separates the stomach from the small intestine 8. Pylorus - the funnel shaped terminal end of the stomach. 9. Pyloric Sphincter - it is located at the inferior end of the stomach. 10. Esophagus - a muscular tube that connects the mouths to the stomach. 11. Muscularis externa - smooth muscle tissue in the GI TRACT that are in circular and longitudinal layers. 12. Mucosa - innermost layer of the stomach with less connective tissue. C. Processes 13. Functions of salivary glands - break down carbohydrates 14. Digestion of the starch begins - mouth 15. Primary function of Pyloric Sphincter - prevent food reflux 16. The process of eliminating waste - Defecation D. Accessory organs and Structures 17. Gall bladder - a sac-like structure that stores bile. 18. Pharynx - not an accessory organ. 19. Villi - finger-like projections formed by the mucosa in the small intestine. E. Other functions and facts 20. Bacteria in the GI tract are somewhat helpful by - producing needed vitamins. 21. The solute that is not common in the urine is - blood protein F. Key points for memorization 22. Enzymes: Amylase (starch), Lipase (fats) 23. Hormones: Secretin(gastric juice secretion regulator) 24. Starch Digestion - starts with mouth 25. Pancreatic enzymes - released in duodenum 26. Duodenum - absorbs nutrients 27. Small and Large intestine - absorbs water. 28. Gallbladder - stores bile 29. Pyloric Sphincter - moves food from stomach to small intestine 30. Villi - increase the nutrient absorption 31. Ileocecal valve - a structure that connects the small intestine to the large intestine. 32. Propulsion - movement of the food from one digestive region to another.
