29.Environment impact of agriculture The greatest impact to greenhouse gases GHG emissions is agriculture. This due to lack of heavy industry. There are three GHG emissions produced by agriculture. Carbon dioxide, Methane, and nitrous oxide. Water quality is at risk from nitrates and phosphates known as eutrophication. This leads to many nutrients have a bad effect especially to water courses. Example when fertiliser run-off enters a lake it causes algae to grow rapidly causing the condition algae bloom. The algae bloom blocks the sunlight stopping photosynthesis and causing fish start to die. By spreading fertiliser and using a buffer zone of 5m from hedgerow and water courses the effects at halved. Farmers must also collect and prevent dairy parlours, collecting yards and pit washings from entering a water course. Biodiversity is where plants and animals live in a particular habitat. Land drainage, pollution, and unsuitable grazing regimes all effect biodiversity. Pollution prevention is better than cure. the change from making hay to silage has a huge impact on birds with a decline in numbers. Corncrake traditionally make their nests on the ground in tall grass. Silage making leads to the destruction of nests. Hedgerows function as a natural barrier to roads and fields they also provide shelter for livestock. By improving growth of hedges, they will become a habitat for many living things. Organic farming is becoming more popular as people are becoming more aware of how there food is produced. This type of farming has no chemicals. Its reply's on biological controls and crop rotation. This type of farming causes less pollution, and healthy habitats.
