LESSON 1 STDs are highly communicable and contracted through sexual contact STDs/STIs: bacteria/virus(no cure) spread by direct sexual/genital contact/fluid exchange asymptomatic: no symptoms/mild symptoms disappear after onset of infection HPV: 150+ viruses, stay in body after symptoms are treated/no cure, vaccine most asymptomatic or penis/vagina/vulva/cervix warts, cervical cancer Chlamydia: bacteria, antibiotic but not 100% effective most asymptomatic or penis/vaginal discharge, urinating burn, itching, nausea, lower ab/back pain, fever, bleeding, intercourse pain, muscle ache, headache, fallopian tube damage, chronic pelvic pain, infertility, urethra/cervix inflamm, baby risk/death Genital Herpes: virus, antiviral decreases frequencies, HSV 1/HSV-2, oral HSV-1 only most asymptomatic or genital/rectum blisters/sores that take weeks to heal, flu/fever/swollen glands, psychological distress, baby risk/death Gonorrhea: bacteria in mucous membranes, antibiotic most asymptomatic (males) or urinating pain/burn, painful/swollen testicles, bleeding, green/yellow/white discharge, chronic pelvic pain, epididymitis, infertility, baby risk Trichomoniasis: protozoan, antibiotic 70% asymptomatic or penis irritation/burning, thick/gray/yellow-green vaginal discharge, itching, discomfort, higher susceptibility to other STDs, baby risks Syphilis: bacterium spirochete, only fresh sore(s) are treatable Stage 1: sore(s), Stage 2: rash on skin, damaged organs, dementia, Stage 3: death Prevention: abstinence/no sexual contact is the only 100% preventable way avoid STDs Lesson 2 All STD s are preventable How to Practice Abstinence: set personal limits on physical affection be clear about your decision avoid dating someone who’s sexually active/who pressures you avoid parties/situations where you may feel pressured avoid people who make fun of your decisions /encourage high-risk behaviors choose group outings practice refusal skills: “No” shaking head/hands up, healthy alternative, walk away?
