It aligns actual performance with set objectives and standards. ▪ Controlling is ongoing; managers must regularly check performance and adjust strategies or actions as needed, ensuring the organization stays on course toward its goals. Controlling What are the steps in the controlling process? Controlling Link between Planning and Controlling ▪ Planning sets the standards; controlling enforces them. Planning establishes the goals, objectives, and standards that the organization aims to achieve. Controlling then measures actual performance against these standards to ensure alignment. ▪ Without the goals set in planning, there would be no benchmarks for controlling. Link between Planning and Controlling ▪ Summary of link between planning and controlling: 1. Formulate the plans. 2. Carry out the plans through strategies formulated. 3. Monitor and compare actual performance with plans. 4. Correct deviations and return to no. 2; or improve future plans by going back to no. 1. Task ▪ In groups of four (4), kindly work on the following case demonstrating the relationship between planning and controlling. Read the case carefully and answer the given questions. Let’s reflect… Think of a time when you had to adjust a plan in your own life. How did you know changes were needed? What did you do in response? Let’s go deeper… Why is it important for a business to control its operations rather than only creating a plan? How does controlling help identify whether a plan is realistic or needs adjustments? Let’s go deeper… Why is it important for a business to control its operations rather than only creating a plan? How does controlling help identify whether a plan is realistic or needs adjustments? Planning and controlling are cyclical and interdependent: the plan sets goals and desired outcomes, and control assesses the progress towards these Insight outcomes, providing feedback to improve future plans.
