CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL ASPECTS OF PATIENT CARE BY MADAM SALIDA Learning outcomes At the end of this session the students should be able to : 1. state the definition of cultural and spiritual. 2. explain the nurses roles in cultural and spiritual aspect of patient care. Introduction ◦Nursing care is holistic and compasses the patient’s perspectives on health, which are greatly are influenced by the patient's culture. ◦Each person is born into a culture influenced by the place of birth and the family origin. ◦A child learns the family’s custom and belief, which shape his or worldview. Con’t ◦An individual’s culture is dynamic and shift over the course of a lifetime, influenced by many other factors such as communities, schools, migration pattern, career choices, and religion. ◦Nurse’s worldwide is influenced by the culture of the nursing profession and the culture of organization that he or she represent. Con’t ◦Therefore ,every nurse- patient interaction is a cultural encounter. ◦It is nurse’s responsibility to recognize the patients’ cultural perspective. CULTURE Introduction ◦Culture shared values, belief and practices by the majority within the group ◦Includes attitudes, roles ,behaviors and religion or spiritual practices. ◦Practices carried from generation to generation. Culturally responsive care ◦Culturally responsive care that is centered on patient’s values and beliefs into the care plan Nurses role to deliver nursing care To deliver the care nurses should 1. Develop self-awareness of his /her own culture, attitudes, and belief 3. Gain 2.Examine the biases and knowledge & assumption about different culture skills to create : trust 4. Nurse & 5. Nurse must patient develop 6. Nurse plan respond to respectful patient’s care patient’s needs relationship Cultural concepts: Culture: is the through ,communications, values and institution of racial, ethnic, religion or social group(office minority health,2005) Subcultural: composed of people who have a distinct identity and related to a larger cultural group. Multicultural : a person who has multiple pattern of identification or crosses several cultures Cont’ Race: is a term with definition : ethnic & culture Ethnicity : is relationship among individuals who believe that they have distinctive characteristics that make them a group. Nationality : an individual has membership since birth Health disparities ◦Health disparities : are the differences in care experienced by one population compared with other population ◦Quality of care : ◦Eg: poor people received worse care than high income people Causes of health disparities Social determinant of health : Behavioral determinant of gender, socio economic, status, health :over weight, obesity, employment status exercise norms, tabaco or alcohol causes Biological and genetic determinant Environmental determinant of of health: family history of heart health: lead exposure, asthma disease , or inherited condition such trigger, workplace safety as hemophilia Cultural model of nursing care ◦Several cultural model are used to guide nursing care of the patient ◦Transcultural nursing : by Madeleine Leininger since 1950s ◦Transcultural nursing focuses on providing care within the differences and similarities of belief ,values and pattern of cultures (Leininger &Mc Farland,2010) CULTURAL THEORY IN MALAYSIA Nursing management ◦Health related questions may include: 1. What are the common healing practices your ethnics/ racial group? 2. What is your view on health? 3. What belief you hold about healthcare providers?
