Quality Assurance- Occupational Control Measures- Managing Injuries 23/9/24 K LOOTAWAN OBJECTIVES Outline the use of Discuss the importance of occupational controls to the correct application of reduce the opportunity for reprocessing methods for patient and health care assuring the safety and worker contact with integrity of patient care potentially infectious equipment material PREVENTING INJURY Main ways of preventing injury in the health care environment: Hand hygiene- reduces spread of microorganism Use of PPE when indicated Clutter free environment Cleaning, disinfection and sterilization ACTIVITY What is the difference between : This activity is to - cleaning, be done individually. disinfection and sterilization On the Ward Measures Have clearly identifiable sharps bins according to institution policy and standard practice Maintain cleanliness and decluttering of ward environment Have adequate stock of consumables Have policy & procedures manual readily available and accessible to all staff Training of custodial workers Identify , label and rectify all hazards Keep proper documentation Ward Measures 01 02 03 Do not use faulty Have MSDS Maintain accurate equipment available records of all stocks including drugs and solutions WHAT IS HEALTH CARE WASTE ? PROTOCO The term health-care waste includes all the waste generated L FOR within health-care facilities, research centers and laboratories HEALTH related to medical procedures. In addition, it includes the same CARE types of waste originating from minor and scattered sources, WASTE including waste produced in the course of health care undertaken DISPOSAL in the home (e.g. home dialysis, self-administration of insulin, recuperative care). SHARPS-items that could cause cuts or puncture wounds INFECTIOUS-material suspected to contain pathogens in sufficient concentration or quantity to cause disease in susceptible hosts CATEGORIE PATHOLOGICAL -a subcategory of infectious waste PHARMACEUTICAL- includes expired, unused, spilt S OF and contaminated pharmaceutical products CHEMICAL-discarded solid, liquid and gaseous chemicals WASTE RADIOACTIVE- materials contaminated with radionuclides NON-HAZARDOUS -general waste is waste that has not been in contact with infectious agents, hazardous chemicals or radioactive substances and does not pose a sharps hazard (WHO (2014). Safe management of waste from health care activities) STEPS FOR RISK ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT 1. Identify hazards – What are the real or potential hazards that could cause harm in the organization? 2. Assess risks – What are the risks if someone is exposed to these hazards, and how likely is it that someone could be exposed to a hazard in the organization? 3. Control risks – What actions can be taken to control the risk? 4. Review control measures – How effective are the controls that are in place, and how can they be modified as required, to ensure the ongoing safety of everyone?
