Organizations have been described as clockworks in which human behaviour is logical and rational, but often seem like snake pits (reflecting chaos) to those who work in them. Clockwork suggests an orderly, idealized view of organizational behaviour without any conflict because all the working parts (the people) mesh smoothly. The snake pit refers to daily conflict, distress, and struggle in organizations. The complexity and dark side of human behaviour can be seen in workplace violence for example.
