Table Talk With those sitting at your table, choose a person to write down a list of the careers you ALL can think of in the Floral Industry. Commercial Growers Produces the plants, cut flowers and foliage used in flower shops Propagators use seeds, cuttings, tissue culture and other advanced techniques to produce young plants Plant breeders combine the science of genetics with the art of plant selection to produce thousands of new and interesting plants types each year Wholesale Florist Purchases flowers and plants from commercial growers and offers a large assortment of cut flowers and foliage to florists Supply both perishable products and non-perishable materials called hard goods (glasswater, floral foam, wire, packaging, tools) A buyer is someone with a solid knowledge of plant and flower varieties and finds the products for wholesalers Retail Florist Sells floral goods and services to the consumer* Several types of retail florists: Full-Service Shops All aspects of retail floral production including delivery service, wire service (customer order with a broker and the order is sent to a local florist to create) and design production Limited-Service Shops Focuses on one specialty service (ex. hospital) Bucket Shops Narrow focus of pre-made mono-botanical (one type of flower, ex. all roses) or mixed bouquets placed in display buckets (ex. Walmart or Target) Specialty Shops Floral Designer Creates floral designs and should be proficient at producing everyday designs ● Knowledge and understanding of floral materials, floral shapes, designs and styles ● Techniques for using living plants, fresh flowers, artificial flowers and dried materials ● How to create and choose the proper materials and mechanics ● Ways to properly handle, store and create to maximize water for flower longevity Specialty Florist An Event Florist, aka studio florist may coordinate an overall look or design based on a theme. Strong understanding of thematic design and spatial relationships (size of space) A Wedding Florist specialises in weddings. Strong communication skills, attention to detail and ability to price products are essential A Set Design Florist may work in TV, film or theater. Strong understanding of the history of floral design, the types of flowers, time of year they were available,and the types of containers that would have been used in that time period Interiorscape Designers provide plants and flowers to indoor environments.
