Government Programs and Initiatives to address Local, National and Global Social Inequalities Social inequality occurs when resources in a given society are distributed unevenly, typically through norms of allocation, that engender specific patterns along lines of socially defined categories of persons. It is the differentiation preference of access of social goods in the society brought about by power, religion, kinship, prestige, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, and class. Social inequality usually implies to the lack of equality of outcome but may alternatively be conceptualized in terms of the lack of equality of access to opportunity. There are five systems or types of social inequality: wealth inequality, treatment and responsibility inequality, political inequality, life inequality, and membership inequality. Political inequality is the difference brought about by the ability to access governmental resources which therefore have no civic equality. In treatment and responsibility differences, some people benefit more and can quickly receive more privileges than others. In working stations, some are given more responsibilities and hence better compensation and more benefits than the rest even when equally qualified. Membership inequality is the number of members in a family, nation, or faith. Life inequality is brought about by the disparity of opportunities which, if present, improve a person's life quality. Finally, income and wealth inequality are the disparity due to what an individual can earn on a daily basis contributing to their total revenue either monthly or yearly. The major examples of social inequality include income gap, gender inequality, health care, and social class. In health care, some individuals receive better and more professional care compared to others. They are also expected to pay more for these “Unido, Junto avanza con el EduKalidad Cree, junto junto puede!” Prepared by: RECIL DELA CRUZ - LUNA / Senior High School Teacher – II Zamboanga City High School Main – Integrated Senior High School 2 services. Social class differential comes evident during the public gathering where upper-class people given the best places to seat, the hospitality they receive and the first priorities they receive. Social inequality refers to disparities in the distribution of economic assets and income as well as between the overall quality and luxury of each person's existence within a society. www.sciencedaily.com › terms › social inequality Indeed, people who are born poor will have more difficulty than people who are born rich. In societies dominated by men, known as patriarchal societies, women tend to have more limitations compared to men. Persons with different sexual orientations also face more difficulty in many instances. People who are born with disabilities are already physically encumbered compared to those born without disabilities. People who are born in urban areas or are born to the dominant cultural or religious groups have an easier time compared to those born in rural areas or are born into families who belong to a cultural or religious minority. Sample Government Program and Initiative to address Local Social Inequalities DOST-IX DELIVERS COVID-19 TESTING BOOTHS TO FACILITIES IN REGION IX Answering the call to help frontliners in the fight against COVID-19, the Department of Science and Technology Region IX (DOST-IX) delivered eight (8) Specimen Collection Booths (SCB) to different CoViD-19 facilities identified by the Department of Health (DOH) in Region IX. Four facility centers in Zamboanga City namely, the City Health Office (CHO), the Mindanao Central Sanitarium, the Labuan Public Hospital, and the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC), each received one (1) SCB unit. Partners from the Margosatubig Regional Hospital and Zamboanga del Sur Medical Center in the Province of Zamboanga del sur had each received a single SCB; and similarly, the Dr. Jose Rizal Memorial Hospital and the Zamboanga del Norte Medical Center in Zamboanga del Norte also received one (1) unit each. The same SCBs will also be delivered to the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Hospital, the Basilan General Hospital, and the Sulu Sanitarium. The SCBs will be used by healthcare professionals to collect samples from patients and individuals that will be tested for the 2019 Corona Virus Disease. Testing through the SCBs will be conducted by seating each patient outside the booth, while the medical professional collects samples by swabbing the patient’s nose and throat using arm-length gloves built into the front window of the booth. The SCB is the product of the Futuristic Aviation and Maritime Enterprise (FAME) incorporated, developed in collaboration with the DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), and the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST- PCHRD). “Unido, Junto avanza con el EduKalidad Cree, junto junto puede!” Prepared by: RECIL DELA CRUZ - LUNA / Senior High School Teacher – II Zamboanga City High School Main – Integrated Senior High School 3 Assembly and distribution of the SCBs are tied to the DOST-IX’s SAVES Program (Devising Operational Strategies and Tools to Safeguard Against the Virulent Epidemic Situation), that focuses on developing pragmatic solutions to be used in the COVID-19 efforts. Government Program and Initiative to address National Social Inequalities The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) is a human development measure of the national government that provides conditional cash grants to the poorest of the poor, to improve the health, nutrition, and the education of children aged 0-18. It is patterned after the conditional cash transfer (CCT) schemes in Latin American and African countries, which have lifted millions of people around the world from poverty. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is the lead government agency of the 4Ps. OBJECTIVES: The 4Ps has dual objectives as the flagship poverty alleviation program of the Aquino administration: 1. Social assistance, giving monetary support to extremely poor families to respond to their immediate needs; and 2. Social development, breaking the intergenerational poverty cycle by investing in the health and education of poor children through programs such as: Health check-ups for pregnant women and children aged 0 to 5; Deworming of schoolchildren aged 6 to 14; Enrolment of children in day care, elementary, and secondary schools; and Family development sessions. The 4Ps also helps the Philippine government fulfill its commitment to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)—specifically in eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, in achieving universal primary education, in promoting gender equality, in reducing child mortality, and in improving maternal health care. Government Program and Initiative in addressing Global Social Inequalities Global inequality involves the concentration of resources in certain nations, significantly affecting the opportunities of individuals in poorer and less powerful countries. Inequality does not only exist in societies, but also among states. There are states that are wealthier and more powerful than other states, and the former end up being more influential in the global community. This leads to situation of global inequality, where poorer and less powerful states end up being controlled and influenced by the richer and more powerful states. The balance of power of states is more often than not rooted in historical events. where the process of colonization in the past led to a relation, where the process of colonization in the past led to a relation of unequal dependency between a former colony and its former colonizer. The case of the Philippines and the United States is a good example of this. Culturally, economically, and politically, the Philippines is perceived to be under the strong influence of the US. “Unido, Junto avanza con el EduKalidad Cree, junto junto puede!” Prepared by: RECIL DELA CRUZ - LUNA / Senior High School Teacher – II Zamboanga City High School Main – Integrated Senior High School 4 Manila, August 28, 2020 — The United States donated 100 new, state-of-the-art ventilators and associated supplies to the Philippines to assist its fight against COVID-19. U.S. Ambassador Sung Kim, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, and Department of Health Secretary Francisco Duque led the handover of the ventilators at Malacañang Palace on Friday, August28. https://ph.usembassy.gov/united-states-provides-100- ventilators-to-the-philippines-to-support-covid-19-response/ Military strength also becomes a source of inequality when states that have superior military prowess are able to bully other countries with weaker military forces. The situation in the Philippine Sea between China and the Philippines is a clear example of this unequal relationships. China forces its way into our territories and claim it as theirs, taking advantage of our weaker navy defences.
