CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD CLAIM -A good claim should be interesting and engaging. -A good claim should be logical. TYPES OF CLAIMS CLAIMS OF FACT CLAIMS OF VALUE CLAIMS OF POLICY CLAIMS OF FACT -is a statement of something that has existed (past), exists (present), or will exist (future). CLAIMS OF FACT -inferences made are based on data, documents, scientific observation, and research. GUIDE QUESTIONS IN WRITING CLAIMS OF FACT -Did it happen? -Is it a fact? -Does it exist? -Is it true? -How can its truthfulness be verified? EXAMPLES 1. The oldest known disease in the world is leprosy. 2. Cancer is not contagious. 3. The climate will get warmer in the next few years because of global warming. 4. The price of college tuition has greatly CLAIMS OF VALUE -is an argument based on morality, belief, ethics, or philosophy. CLAIMS OF VALUE -it is influentially stated by combining limited facts and proving them as either good or bad by targeting the reader’s emotion. GUIDE QUESTIONS IN WRITING CLAIMS OF VALUE -Which claims endorse what is good or bad? -What qualities should be considered good? Why? -Which of these values content with others? GUIDE QUESTIONS IN WRITING CLAIMS OF VALUE -Which ones are more important? -Whose standards are used? EXAMPLES 1. Death penalty is unjust. 2. Cheating in sports is wrong. 3. It is better to have loved and lost, than nothing to have loved at all. CLAIMS OF POLICY -is the argument where actions should be carried out. Basically, it is perceived as a relatively direct statement. CLAIMS OF POLICY -this claim can also be called claim of solution because it suggests and supports policies and solutions, and the action to be taken is based on the results. GUIDE QUESTIONS IN WRITING CLAIMS OF POLICY -What should we do? -How should we act? -How can we solve this problem? -What course of action should we pursue? EXAMPLES 1. A dress code should be introduced for all students. 2. People who refuse to recycle should be forced to do alternative community service. EXAMPLES 3. Texting while driving should be an offense punishable by jail time. 4. Children in low-income families should receive medical insurance from the government.
