Bac- Bacarra Festival Location: Bacarra, Ilocos Norte Type: Farmers Festival Date: November 30 Description: The legendary word “bac-bacarra” is a species of freshwater fish abundant in the river during the 15th century which gave birth to the town’s name. 2. Guling- Guling Festival Location: Paoay, Ilocos Norte Date: February (before Ash Wednesday) Description: Guling-Guling Festival is a traditional occasion that happens yearly in the month of February in Paoay, Ilocos Norte. It is held before Ash Wednesday or the start of the season of Lent, also known as “Semana Santa,” which begins 40 days prior to Easter. It is celebrated as the last day of merry-making and enjoyment for the townspeople before the Lenten season. This festival in Paoay, Ilocos Norte was introduced by the Spanish friars in the 16th century during the olden days of the Spanish regime. It was celebrated by the religious sector as a way of interaction with their members. 3. Pamulinawen Festival Location: Laoag City, Ilocos Norte Date: Early week of February Description: The Pamulinawen Festival is the annual fiesta of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. Held every early week of February, the fiesta commemorates St. William the Hermit, the patron saint of Laoag, whom residents believe is the one who saved Laoag from calamities. Pamulinawen is the name of a woman made popular in the classic Ilocano song entitled, Pamulinawen. "Pamulinawen” is the most popular song among Ilocanos. 4. Empanada Festival Location: Batac City, Ilocos Norte Date: June 23 Description: The Empanada Festival of Batac was created to showcase the city's famous delicacy, the Batac Empanada. Celebrating its eighth charter day on June 23, the City of Batac will again host the annual Empanada Festival highlighted by the Street Dance Competition. Participating are students clad in colorful costumes of bright yellow, warm orange, brown, and green, and dancing to the upbeat tune of Ciudad ti Batac. 5. Sinait Garlic Festival Location: Sinait, Ilocos Sur Date: May 1-3 Description: Sinait Garlic Festival is held during the 1st to 3rd of May to showcase the talent, ingenuity, and hard work of Ilocano farmers in various competition forms. It is said that the primary objective of the festival is to give recognition to garlic farmers; it also aims to educate visitors and local residents on the importance of the garlic industry to the Philippine economy. 6. Viva Vigan Festival Location: Vigan City, Ilocos Sur Date: First week of May Description: A grand celebration of the town’s cultural heritage takes place in the first week of May. There is street dancing, a fashion show, a kalesa parade, and, of course, lots of food. It promotes awareness of the value of the historic town, which was hoped to strengthen resolve to preserve and protect this heritage site. 7. Longaniza Festival Location: Vigan City, Ilocos Sur Date: January 22 Description: Longganisa Festival is the first festivity celebrated in Vigan every year, which usually happens every 22nd of January, the date of the cityhood of Vigan. Over the past years, the Viva Vigan Festival has become one of the biggest cultural events in the North, attracting domestic and foreign visitors who come to Vigan on a pilgrimage to our heritage.
